non apology apology
[edit]So far there hasn't been a direct source saying he has apologized for his remarks, only he 'apologizes' for the reaction. TRWBW 15:11, 17 September 2006 (UTC)
- "Yesterday, Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood stated that the non-apology apolgy was not enough and however today they stated that the personal statement is 'sufficient'." I haven't personally checked to make sure this quote from the article is true, but assuming it is, wouldn't that make this personal response more of an actuall apology? If the group that publically decried his previous text-book PR response is content with this latest action from the pope, that seems to put it in the realm of actuall apology.--Cousarr 15:19, 17 September 2006 (UTC)
- There definitely is an issue over whether this is a real apology or a non-apology. Groups other than the Muslim Brotherhood still dispute whether this is a real apology, and I don't want to dismiss them out of hand. TRWBW 15:50, 17 September 2006 (UTC)
- "These in fact were a quotation from a medieval text, which do not in any way express my personal thought." Basically the Pope refuted his comments. Zer T 16:18, 17 September 2006 (UTC)
- It's not my fault if I can't figure out if the Pope is really apologizing or not, he seems to be choosing weasel words. If he would just throw himself on the ground and cry 'forgive me for my sin' I would know exactly where he stands. ;) If you're confident, please go ahead and take out the quote marks. - I'm going to remove the quote marks, as it already says he apologizes for the reaction to his statements, which is not so much an apology for making them, and as such seems a fair compromise between the viewpoints here.--Cousarr 17:08, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

Whoops, maybe I misunderstood what we were discussing. I thought the question was whether the title should be "The Pope apologises in person for his remarks." The way it is now seems weird to me. How can someone "apologise" for someone elses "reaction"? TRWBW 17:16, 17 September 2006 (UTC)
- Well, as per my viewpoint on the issue the original wording would be optimal. Taking your viewpoint into consideration this is an inadequate headline as not all muslims feel this is a true apology. So, as a compromise I say we agree that he apologized, but maybe not in a fashion that is acceptable. So he did apologize, not "apologize" but it was only for the reaction to his statements and not the statements themselves.--Cousarr 17:35, 17 September 2006 (UTC)
nonsensical headline
[edit]How can the pope apologize for the reations (of others) to his comments? --vonbergm 22:43, 17 September 2006 (UTC)
- Maybe a nonsense title is the right way to go. I can't figure out if he's really apologising or not, so why not leave the reader a little confused too. TRWBW 01:00, 18 September 2006 (UTC)
