There isn't a WHY in this article, and the one source that mentions the Shinn sale to Temasek is a bit extreme. The sale to what wikipedia describes as the "investment arm of the Singapore goverment" is really the straw that broke the camel's back in this situation. What is going to be really weird is that the election will have a measurable percentage of abstentions. To be eligible to run for office, or simply to maintain the right to vote, you must complete a ballot paper. For both the consitituency and party ballot papers in the lower house's election there is an abstention box in the bottom right.
