From what I recall about reading about the original conviction, it wasn't that Randal ran crack that got Intel all up in arms. It was that he had any access to their machines at all given that has latest contract with that particular group had ended. The access they found was a mail forwarding daemon, but they spent thousands and thousands of dollars figuring out what was there. Of course, the mail forwarding daemon was there because Intel kept hiring him for more contracts. Intel also claimed that this was a violation of their policies, but apparently they never gave Randal a copy of their policies. And this after they contracted for him to be a system administrator for them.

Sorry, but I can't cite any sources at this point.
