On Tuesday, Ukraine said Russian senior nuclear weapons chief Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov and his assistant were assassinated in a scooter bomb attack.
They called him a “completely legitimate target”.
The bomb was hidden inside the scooter and was detonated remotely, the BBC said.
“Igor Kirillov, the head of the radiation, chemical and biological protection forces of the armed forces of the Russian Federation, and his assistant were killed,”
Kirillov was the highest-ranking military official to be killed outside the battlefield thus far in the Russo-Ukranian war.[Source] On Monday, Ukrainian prosecutors alleged that Kirillov illegally used chemical weapons in the Ukraine-Russia war. SBU security service said this on Telegram. The UK issued sanctions against him for this, and accused him of spreading disinformation on behalf of the Kremlin.
Deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council Dmitry Medvedev vowed "imminent" vengeance against Ukraine and denounced the assassination as "cowardly" and "despicable".
The Ukrainian government had yet to release comment on Kirillov's death.
