From Wikinews, the free news source you can write!
Jump to navigation Jump to search

Wikinews is a news source that aims to provide news about the events happening all over the world. Though technology had brought the world closer, it is still vast. Wikinews is available in various languages, which can be helpful if exploited properly. Writing news is not really hard unlike English assignment in the high school to write articles. Well, since we can not copy from other news source directly until their content is available in a Creative Commons license compatible with the one used on this project, we can indeed take help of the sister projects. For those who are bilingual, it is easy and time saving to write a news article from, let's say Italian Wikinews about an event that happened in Turin than to write it from scratch.

There are pros and cons. An article about Spanish election is likely to be covered in depth (or at least something) on es.wikinews. But since Español is not limited to Spain, in fact, spread in the Latin countries minus Brazil and parts of the US, an article about Argentine hurricane might be also be covered on es.wikinews. This is the point. There is not separate Wikinews where editors are likely to focus* about Argentina. What I mean is, most of the editors writes and tends to cover events happening in their country. Of course there are exceptions; I haven't written much about India. the trick is to discover the editors who write about a particular country and keep a watch on their edits.

I feel I have been ignorant to many regions of the world. Evidently, the events from New Zealand are not common these days even though it is an English speaking nation. Australia — I left it for the editors from Australia.

Netherlands, Greece, Austria, Sudan, South Africa, Canada, Poland... there are many countries which I never had written/published article. The other major factor is lack of knowledge of good news media from those countries.

(en) (es) (ca) (pt) (fr) (ar) (ur) (zh) (ho) (ja) (de) (po) (ru) The map is self explanatory. Wikipedia of various languages offers a section of "In the news" on the Main Page. But that is not the final solution. Where to go for the sources?
