- Former US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton has asked the US State Department to release e-mails which she admits to sending from her private e-mail account during her time in office. Late Wednesday evening, Clinton posted a statement via the social media site, Twitter writing: "I want the public to see my email. I asked State to release them. They said they will review them for release as soon as possible." The scandal is mostly underpinned by US laws requiring transparency in government communications, and the inability to guarantee that to citizens when official correspondence happens outside government channels.
Media sources indicate the tensions has been escalated by both Democrats and Republicans.

Texas Zika Illness Linked to Miami Travel
A Texas resident who recently traveled to an area of Miami with local Zika transmission has tested positive for the virus. The traveler, an El Paso County resident, recently returned from the area and sought testing after becoming ill. This is the first Texas case to be linked to travel within the continental United States. The case will be classified as “travel-associated” and is being investigated for more details. Health officials linked this case to Miami travel after closely evaluating travel dates, symptom onset date and known local transmission of Zika virus in Miami. This will be El Paso County’s first Zika case, and the county has found no other evidence of the virus or local transmission. Excluding this case, Texas has reported 108 cases associated with travel to areas with active Zika transmission. This count includes three pregnant women, two infants infected before birth, and one person who had sexual contact with a traveler. There have been no reported cases of Zika virus disease transmitted by mosquitoes in Texas, but Texas is on alert for the possibility of local transmission. State efforts have been underway since January to delay and minimize the impact of Zika on Texas. To avoid infecting local mosquitoes, people who travel to areas with active Zika transmission should apply insect repellent every time they go outside for at least three weeks after they return to Texas – and longer if they develop an illness that could be Zika. State health officials urge everyone to visit www.TexasZika.org and follow precautions to protect themselves from mosquito bites: • Apply EPA-approved insect repellent. • Wear pants and long-sleeve shirts that cover exposed skin. In warmer weather, wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that covers exposed skin. • Use screens or close windows and doors to keep mosquitoes out of your home. • Remove standing water in and around the home. This includes water in cans, toys, tires, plant saucers, and any container that can hold water. • Cover trash cans or containers where water can collect."
Various reports released Monday indicate a surge in Zika cases across portions of the lower United States region. Officials in Mississippi noted two new cases of the virus, reportedly contracted while the patients were visiting Nicaragua.

The 2025 government shutdown came to a close on Wednesday night after an amended temporary funding bill was signed into law by President Trump. The amended bill which passed the House 229-209 primarily along partisan lines. This came after eight Democratic senators crossed the floor both Sunday and Monday to cloture and pass the amended bill.
The shutdown of 43 days, which was the longest in American history occurred as a result of Senate Democrats being unhappy with the funding towards programs established by the Affordable Care Act in 2010. The eight Senate Democrats that crossed the floor primarily crossed so SNAP benefits could reopen.
The government under this temporary funding bill will be open until January 2026, SNAP benefits will be available until September 2026

Eight Senate Democrats crossed the floor on Sunday to vote in favor of cloture to a temporary allocation bill debate. The motion of cloture passed 60-40 after all Republican senators except for Rand Paul (R-KY).
The eight senators to cross the floor were Jeanne Shaheen and Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire, Catherine Cortez Masto and Jacky Rosen of Nevada, Dick Durbin of Illinois, John Fetterman of Pennsylvania, 2016 Vice Presidential nominee Tim Kaine of Virgina, and Angus King, an independent Senator from Maine who, nonetheless, is a member of the Senate Democratic Caucus.
The bill will reopen the government until January and will fund SNAP benefits until September. If it succeeds, it would end what has become the longest government shutdown in American history.
