Notes on how to use this template[edit]

When to use it?[edit]

This template is for referencing scientific papers, like from Science, Nature, etc.

Template code[edit]

You can copy-paste the empty template below into your news article. Further explanation is given in the table below.

{{Source-science|
 |authors=
 |url=
 |title=
 |journal=
 |pubyear=
 |edition=
 |pagenumbers=
 |database1url=
 |database1=
 |database2url=
 |database2=
 }}

Usage of parameters[edit]

Parameter Usage Example
authors= List all the authors as mentioned in the paper.
  • Do not add a dot after them, since a period is inserted automatically.
  • If you chose to use the abbreviation et al. if there are many writers, consider putting this in Italic, since it is Latin.
Silveira JR, Raymond GJ, Hughson AG, Race RE, Sim VL, Hayes SF, Caughey B
url= URL of the paper on the website of the journal publishing it. http://www.somejournal.com/...
title= Title of the article.
  • This may or may not include subtitles, capitalisation or not.
  • Again, do not use a full point as this is done automatically.
The most infectious prion protein particles
journal= Name of the journal.
  • This redirect to the Wikipedia article on that journal, like this:{{{journal}}}_(journal). This means that automatically, it tries to find a Wikipedia article like "Nature (journal)" or "Science (journal)". So it's not necessary to type "(journal)" yourself.
  • If an article with that title doesn't exist, consider creating a redirect to that article (e.g. redirect "New England Journal of Medicine (journal)" to "New England Journal of Medicine").
Nature
pubyear= The year of publication. 2005
edition= The edition of the journal: this can be only the edition in general, or both the edition in total and the edition in that year. 437(7056)
pagenumbers= Fill in from what page to what page the article is published.
  • This can be a full description, like 781-788, or a shorter version like 781-8. Also, there's no need to put in a dot, it's inserted automatically.
257-61
database1url= The url of this article's entry in a commonly used database like PubMed, EMBASE, Psychological Abstracts, BIOSIS, Scholar.google.com, etc.
  • If you don't want to specify a database, you can leave the parameter empty or not have it. However if you leave a database name parameter empty also leave the matching database URL empty.
http://www.somedatabase.com/...
database1= The name of that database.
  • If you don't want to specify a database, you can leave the parameter empty or not have it. However if you leave a database name parameter empty also leave the matching database URL empty.
PubMed
database2url= The URL of the paper's entry in the second database. http://www.anotherdatabase.com/...
database2= The same thing, for a second database, which could be a free-access alternative like PubMed Central. PubMed Central

Examples[edit]

The example used in the table above (with proper URLs) would finally look like this:

Silveira JR, Raymond GJ, Hughson AG, Race RE, Sim VL, Hayes SF, Caughey B. The most infectious prion protein particles. Nature, 2005; 437(7056): 257-61. PubMed PubMed Central

Another example without a database entry:

Wu JT, Riley S, Fraser C, Leung GM. Reducing the impact of the next influenza pandemic using household-based public health interventions. PLoS Medicine, 2006; 3(9): e361.

Same example, but without the optional URL:

Wu JT, Riley S, Fraser C, Leung GM. Reducing the impact of the next influenza pandemic using household-based public health interventions. PLoS Medicine, 2006; 3(9): e361.
