Orson Scott Card, a self-identifying Democrat, reported in his Rhinocerous Times column that Democrats are to blame for the housing crisis and not Bush, McCain and Republicans. Card reserved his greatest criticism for journalists who he asserts have been dishonest by actively promoting a "big fat lie" and being complacent in criticizing Bush, McCain and Republicans instead of Pelosi (and others), though the Republicans were the victims of Pelosi's lies.

Card claims that if Republicans had been the ones lying, journalists would have picked up on it quickly and condemned it swiftly in the press instead of keeping quiet. Card asserted his claims by reporting law changes made by Democrats during the Clinton administration were retained despite fierce opposition by some members of the Republican party. Card named Senator Christopher Dodd (D.) and Congressman Barney Frank (D.) as being particularly outspoken in their efforts to prevent federal intervention in the matter, and "were still pushing for these agencies to go even further in promoting sub-prime mortgage loans almost up to the minute they failed". Card went on to say "If you who produce our local daily paper actually had any principles, you would be pounding this story, because the prosperity of all Americans was put at risk by the foolish, short-sighted, politically selfish, and possibly corrupt actions of leading Democrats, including Obama."

Other Democrats have also noted that the Democratic Party has been behind the economic crisis; Alec Baldwin, for example, has pointed out that the changes made during the Clinton administration led up to the current crisis.
