A Transparency Report released by Google on Thursday revealed a large increase in government data requests and a larger proportion of requests originating in the United States.
The report indicated a nine percent increase in government data requests overall for the first six months of 2017 compared to the same period last year. There were 48,941 worldwide requests and 16,823 (34%) from the United States government in the first half of 2017. The majority of the requests were in the form of subpoenas.
There were 45,500 worldwide requests and 13,600 (30%) from the United States in the previous Transparency Report for the second half of 2016.
Apple has also reported more government requests for data.
