Welcome

Azertus, welcome to Wikinews! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

Our key policies - if you read anything, read these!

Here a few pointers to help you get to know Wikinews:

There are always things to do on Wikinews:

By the way, you can sign your name on Talk pages using four tildes (~~~~), which produces your name and the current date. If you have any questions, you can ask them at the water cooler or to anyone on the Welcommittee, or ask me on my Talk page. Again, welcome! → CGorman (Talk) 22:00, 25 May 2005 (UTC)Reply

WikiNews Contest

[edit]

We decided to do as you requested, and grant preliminary approval to your articles if there is nothing obviously wrong with them, with final approval dependent on a Dutch-speaking judge. Unfortunately, all the links to sources in your September 1 article and one of the source links today seem broken. I suspect that those links require a userid/password or that they were temporary pages which have now expired. If you can fix those links and let me know, I will take another look at them. There is still a problem with those sources, see my comments under September 1. Please fix them and let me know to look again. There is also a problem with this source in the September 3 article:
Jan Debackere "Minder televisie op Telenet". De Standaard, 3 september 2005 (registratie noodzakelijk)
Hopefully, once these sources are fixed, you will have some good articles with reliable sources. StuRat 16:05, 4 September 2005 (UTC)Reply
I've added a notice to the September 1 article.
"Registratie noodzakelijk" means it's necessary to subscribe first to read the article. All articles are also available in the paper edition of the paper. For € 1,5- one can get a "day-pass" to access all articles in the archive. --azertus 16:57, 4 September 2005 (UTC)
I haven't hit that message, yet. Aren't there any free sources ? Our readers aren't going to want to pay money and/or give out financial info just to read a source. StuRat 17:07, 4 September 2005 (UTC)Reply
This news is only of interest to Belgian readers and all major Belgian newspapers have paying archives. I've found/added a link to a free online newspaper now. I will keep your comment in mind and look out for free archives... Sometimes I will probably have no choice but to include paying sources though. --Azertus 17:20, 4 September 2005 (UTC)Reply
Good. Wiki does have a policy against allowing advertising, and I'm afraid a link to a site that asks you for money to read anything might fall into that category. Maybe attitudes are different in Belgium than in the US, because most people here wouldn't want anything to do with a news site that charges money. StuRat 01:40, 5 September 2005 (UTC)Reply
I've raised this issue with the other judges. You are welcome to make a statement in support of using sources which require money to view, under Sept 10 -> here. StuRat 11:56, 10 September 2005 (UTC)Reply
