Restoring a historic recording

((Tracking you down from en:WP!) You've been recommended to me as someone who might be able to help – I've uploaded this 1899 recording of the Welsh national anthem, which is the first known recording in the Welsh language. Is there anything that can be done to improve it, do you think, and what's the best way for me to try to do that? In any case, do you think that it might have Featured Sound potential, or is it just too poor a starting point? Regards, Bencherlite (talk) 23:06, 15 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The quality is not as bad as some things I've successfully restored before, and it doesn't sound like there's too many problems to me. It's always harder to restore something in a foreign language, because one does not recognise the words, so I can't promise anything, but I'll give it a go when I get home. Thanks

Hi Dendodge, sorry you couldn't find a reason to oppose my RfA, but thanks for taking the alternative option and supporting me! :-) the wub "?!" 23:44, 15 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please join the discussion, if you can do it attentively, if you have some free 30 minutes?

I'm just afraid that this novice user Wikiwide, the author of the article, being probably a scientist (you just look at the first version of this article), has a very little understanding of what Wikinews is. And probably has lots of other work to do, is not interested, etc. Even the topic of climate contrarians near UNCCC sounds scientific, doesn't it? I think that if you revive this article, it will be very good

  • for Wikinews,
  • for this user, and
  • for the environment
    • (as some of the "skeptics" or
    • just common diesel car drivers can find this article realistic)

Please be informed that only an experienced Wikinews user can manage with such significant and responsible task. Q/0/k 04:14, 16 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

How did you make it so that the special Wikinews Santa hat logo would appear on the top left of your user page? --Rayboy8 (my talk) (my contributions) 11:18, 22 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The code is at MediaWiki:Common.css/User:Dendodge. You need to be an administrator to make one for yourself, if that's what you're after, but I can do it for you if you're not and you'd like me to. Dendodge T\C 12:53, 22 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, yes. There is a variation of the Wikinews logo that I would like you to place specifically on my userpage.--Rayboy8 (my talk) (my contributions) 13:18, 22 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

OK, just tell me the filename, and I'll create MediaWiki:Common.css/User:Rayboy8 for you. Dendodge T\C 13:19, 22 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It was a Bitmap image that was created on the Art program on a Microsoft Windows computer. It is not on Wikimedia Commons. As well as that, I'm exactly sure as to how to get the image through. --Rayboy8 (my talk) (my contributions) 15:22, 22 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If you're willing to freely-license the image, you can upload it to commons or upload it to Wikinews. I'm not sure if the CSS works with external images (i.e. from flikr or Photobucket); my guess would be no, since the Foundation are rather cautious about such things. If you don't want to freely license it, I'm afraid it won't be possible to use it on this site. Dendodge T\C 15:25, 22 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

How do you convert a Bitmap image to another type of image like png? The reason I'm asking is because Wikimedia Commons don't accept Bitmap images. --Rayboy8 (my talk) (my contributions) 15:37, 22 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Doesn't it? In Paint, .png is one of the accepted filetypes. Simply select that when saving the file, and it should work. Dendodge T\C 15:39, 22 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I've got the image! Sorry about that: Here it is:

Can you please make sure that this only appears below the word Wikinews on my user page only? Is that possible? --Rayboy8 (my talk) (my contributions) 15:48, 22 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much for this. But what do I do now? --Rayboy8 (my talk) (my contributions) 16:13, 22 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I've put it in the place of the logo on your userpage (you might have to press Ctrl-Shift-R to see the change). There's a white background ATM—I would have sorted it out for you, but Photoshop is refusing to open until I re-install it. As soon as I connect my new USB DVD drive (my old one went kaput), I'll re-install Photoshop and get you a pretty transparent image. Dendodge T\C 16:23, 22 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I don't understand. The logo doesn't seem to be appearing some for reason despite pressing the keys you said. Sorry to ask now, but can you please make it so that this logo appears on the following pages?

I would be quite grateful for this. Thanks, Rayboy8 (my talk) (my contributions) 16:59, 22 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I've done that for you. I'm still trying to get Photoshop installed, but your logo will be my first task when I do. It might not display for a while; you have to wait for your browser to clear its cache (ctrl-shift-r normally does that, but not always) before you can see the change. Dendodge T\C 17:10, 22 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please contact me as soon as you can do this. Thanks, Rayboy8 (my talk) (my contributions) 17:15, 22 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

OK, now I can see the special logos. Thank you so much for this. Please provide me with any updates on my talk page. Thanks, Rayboy8 (my talk) (my contributions) 17:58, 22 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, can just clarify when you'll be able to make the image on my pages blend in with the Vector background? --Rayboy8 (my talk) (my contributions) 19:31, 22 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
(cross-posted to user talk page per request) I'll do it in Gimp now. Dendodge T\C 20:07, 22 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
(cross-posted to user talk page per request) Done. Dendodge T\C 20:32, 22 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Special Wikinews logo

You know that special Wikinews logo you made appear on the top left of my pages? Can you please add it to the top left of the following pages?
