Welcome[edit]

Kyelewis, welcome to Wikinews! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

Our key policies - if you read anything, read these!

Here a few pointers to help you get to know Wikinews:

There are always things to do on Wikinews:

By the way, you can sign your name on Talk pages using four tildes (~~~~), which produces your name and the current date. If you have any questions, you can ask them at the water cooler or to anyone on the Welcommittee, or ask me on my Talk page. Again, welcome! → CGorman (Talk) 20:54, 6 Jun 2005 (UTC)

whoops[edit]

Sorry, I mis-read which direction you were the moving the pages and blocked you! Thanks for the clear-up help; sorry I wasn't around earlier to block the vandal sooner. Dan100 (Talk) 10:56, 8 Jun 2005 (UTC)

No problems - i'm used to seeing wiki-spam, though as the only spammed wiki that I usually deal with, the EveryDNS FAQ wiki, doesn't have image upload capacity, i'm not used to seeing goatse-style pictures around. *Welcomes himself to WikiNews*. I kinda like the place. Kyelewis 11:03, 8 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Wikinews radio[edit]

Hi Kye,

thanks for your support with the WNN. I hope we can move the functionality of your wiki into Wikinews itself soon. In that regard, I have two requests:

  • Could you add the following note in boldface on the wiki frontpage: This wiki is used purely to demonstrate and test the processes and technology that will be used for Wikinews Network. Please put only a minimal amount of information on this wiki; activity should take place on http://en.wikinews.org/ if at all possible. Thank you!
  • Are you interested in helping to get the broadcasting features you added into MediaWiki properly? I'm a CVS admin, so I'd be happy to give you access, but we'd have to agree on the implementation strategy first (with the other developers as well).
    • The best setup would probably be as an extension. Extensions can implement special pages, see e.g. the Makesysop extension and the BoardVote extension. The "hooks" concept is documented here.
    • I'm not quite sure what the best strategy would be to put additional preferences in an extension, but I'm sure it's possible somehow, perhaps on the special page itself. Is there a specific reason to have the broadcast password separate from the regular user password? You say it's not as secure as a wiki login password, what is the reason for that?
    • The main reason to have it as an extension is that it won't be relevant for most MediaWiki installations and should only be enabled for Wikinews. If it can't be made into an extension at all, a global $wgBroadcastSupport option that, when disabled, hides all the relevant functionality would be a requirement. But it would be difficult to get that into the main development branch.

I'd be interested in your thoughts. Thanks,--Eloquence 18:31, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)
