Add topicAFAIK IRC logs are public domain, please revert. Onymous 81.217.21.244 13:27, 11 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- The channels #Wikipedia and #Wikimedia have a policy of no public logging. It is also polite to ask permission from those involved before quoting them publically. -- Sannse 13:29, 11 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- Please cite a source for this policy. If your answer is "Jimbo says so", that's OK - he's the ultimate authority, but otherwise it seems strange that prominent Wikipedia contributors making comments in a publically available forum have an expectation of privacy.
- <http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/IRC#IRC_channels>. HTH, Kate.
- If folks want to make a stink about this, I'm sure Wikinews will abide by their wishes, but I find invoking "copyright" to suppress reporting on this story rather odd, coming from such prominent proponents of a GFDL project.

- (And after reading the log, it seems rather counter-productive to raise a stink about this anyways.)

m:IRC_channels lists #wikimedia as one of the channels that is not to be publicly logged. Although the more carefully explicit prohibition on logging on that page only refers to #wikipedia, there has always been an understanding that the same applied on #wikimedia (and the other channels listed as no logging in the table). It was a mistake not to make this more explicit, and one that I will correct shortly. My own comments relate to the social norms of that channel and basic politeness in not publishing logs without permission rather than copyright - I don't have Jamesday's knowledge of the intricacies of copyright law. I'm sure Jimbo will be willing to make his own views clear on this when he is around -- Sannse 14:40, 11 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks for the clarification.
- It's our loss if the page is blanked, as it isn't often we get a chance to gain some insight into the thinking of this project's founder and other prominent contributors.
- I respect the legalistic and ethical arguments, but I was hoping that the benefit of this log would allow the authors to put aside their objections for the benefit of Wikinews.
- The strong nature of the request, invoking copyright, wiretapping laws, etc., just seems a bit overkill, when a simple request without invoking all of those threatening terms would have been enough.
- If there is something embarrasing or otherwise offensive in the log (I don't see anything) I could better understand this request.
- I hope James and you don't have hard feelings towards Onymous over this.
- Thanks for stopping by Wikinews.

- My request was a simple one, I have only minimal knowledge of the copyright side of this. I certainly don't have any hard feelings here and, of course, this is a lot less about the actual content of this conversation than the whole question of publishing logs from the channels -- Sannse 17:48, 11 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks for patiently trying to clarify what is going with this deletion request. I hope the next time you visit Wikinews, it will be under more pleasant circumstances. — DV 17:56, 11 Jan 2005 (UTC)
