Hello and welcome to Wikinews! I see you've come from Wikipedia so you're already familiar with how this all works. I've no doubt someone will be along shortly to give you the official welcome. For the moment, may I just congratulate you on a very professional sounding recording for Pluto's moons named. Very impressive. Keep it up. WillJenkins 17:35, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
- Hi WillJenkins. Thank you for your kind comments - and the welcome! I used your recordings as a base for mine - so thank you also for your wondeful contributions to the community! They were an inspiration for me. I am also having a few ideas for new ways that Spoken Wikinews can be used on Wikinews to further increase the usability of it. I'll probably detail them on the Audio talk page before long! --Skenmy 17:38, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
ditto willjenkins on Pluto's moons named. and below is the promised welcome :) Doldrums 17:52, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
Welcome
Skenmy/Archive 1, welcome to Wikinews! Thank you for your contributions; I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:
Our key policies - if you read anything, read these!
- Wikinews:Neutral point of view - tell every side to a story in a fair and balanced way
- Wikinews:Cite sources - everything in a Wikinews article must be sourced
Here a few pointers to help you get to know Wikinews:
- Wikinews:Introduction - overview of the site
- Wikinews:Writing an article - how to write and publish a complete article
- Wikinews:Content guide - what's suitable for Wikinews
- Wikinews:Contents - the contents page.
There are always things to do on Wikinews:
- Existing articles need expanding and checking for spelling and mistakes
- The front page lead articles often need updating
- Developing stories need finishing and publishing
- Discussions need your input
- And of course, stories need writing!
By the way, you can sign your name on Talk pages using four tildes (~~~~), which produces your name and the current date. If you have any questions, you can ask them at the water cooler or to anyone on the Welcommittee, or ask me on my Talk page. Again, welcome!

Original reporting
I need to see some confirmation of original reporting so I can label the Google Checkout article with it. I don't believe that using a press release exactly counts. I mean, if were at a press confrence or watched it on television and take notes, then sure, that would be original. --TUFKAAP 16:40, 29 June 2006 (UTC)
- Nope - I can agree with you on that one. It's literally just transferred from Press Release to News Article - not exactly original. I labelled it as Original because it wasn't just a write up of a different news article. Thanks! --Skenmy(talk)|(ideas) 18:34, 29 June 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for your quick editing - Im just a newbie and you did just what was needed. Fentonrobb 14:58, 29 October 2006 (UTC)
Help and advice please - there's a picture and bio of the Suktan at BBC http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/africa/6096420.stm
Can any of this be used and, if so, where do I find out how to copy a photo across? Fentonrobb 16:43, 29 October 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for the advice Skenny. I am on a long slow learning curve! Fentonrobb 18:06, 29 October 2006 (UTC)
Good thinking getting the METAR! So much for eyewitnesses. The whole thing needs careful watching - I'm not much good on Nigeria, but there seem to have been a lot of VIPs on board. Both the plane and the operator seem to have good safety records. Let's try to stick with it. Fentonrobb 18:41, 29 October 2006 (UTC)
Re the weather report - Reuters cites State radio said there had been bad weather as the plane took off[2]
Glad to know you are aviation enthusiast - was a PPL myself many years ago - now have to be content with X-Plane! Fentonrobb 19:08, 29 October 2006 (UTC)

RE Rfa
Well edit more, write some more article maybe participate in some discussions. My current vote does not reflect future votes. It took me a long time to be an Admin. No offense, you may make a good one, but make some more edits and participate more and or write a few articles. I hope that my vote does not discourage you. Jason Safoutin 20:27, 29 October 2006 (UTC)
- I agree. You are an excellent user, and I am very glad you are editing Wikinews, however I just don't know if you'd "use the buttons" as much as some of our other administrators. However, like Illya said, if you apply in maybe February 2007, I would definintly support it for ya. Thunderhead(talk) 21:20, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
- Actually, I admin a wiki on Wikia, if you wanted to be an admin on that, and help me, I'd agree. Thunderhead(talk) 21:44, 2 November 2006 (UTC)

In the meantime, a bit of advice - don't volunteer a blank cheque, I might cash it in by asking you to join MessedRocker's standards task force to clean up old articles, there's going to be a lot of thankless work to do there. :-) --Brian McNeil / talk 17:21, 4 November 2006 (UTC)

- I just read your userpage again, seeing your age made me feel old :-) But on the other hand delighted to see people of your age taking an interest in the news, and by being on Wikinews, in how it is presented to people. Good luck with the A levels (I'm originally from Scotland and did "Highers"... ask your parents about that), and once again congrats on making admin. Oh, and you might have noticed I found the staff car, yes it has been cleaned. --Brian McNeil / talk 18:57, 7 November 2006 (UTC)

Help please
I have rewritten the Bomber get life article and pulished it as /Temp. Now its shunted into articles. What happens now? As you know I'm a newbie and quite lost at times. I'd welcome advice too about copyright over matters of fact as explained in the Talk to the article. Fentonrobb 20:53, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
- If it was {{copyvio}}, an administrator or other Wikinews user will review it, and if it is no longer copyvio, we will move it. Thunderhead(talk)(Check out my RFA test) 21:02, 7 November 2006 (UTC)

Datrio CSS
Do you mind if I move your version of Datrio's CSS, to Wikinews:Skins/Datrio.css as that way, you can change your skin if you ever want to, without messing up the peoples whose monobook css depends on it. Bawolff ☺☻ 18:57, 12 November 2006 (UTC)

Reconsider Accred. Request
Paul, reconsider the accred. request in a couple of weeks. I think you have a great idea, personally. In fact, I was going to start a conversation at the water cooler about photojournalism and what people thought its ramifications where with regard to Wikinews. Your request had a few supports and a couple of neutrals, but no unsupports. It might have been going places, if slowly.
In the interim, show people what photojournalism can do if you want. I'm sure you can deal with some stories and take some pictures without a press pass.
I like the idea. The reason I didn't say so in your accred. request page is because I've been here a grand total of five days and as such my support wouldn't carry any weight. -Richard 'Doc' Kinne 21:11, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
Iraq, Syria, Iran restore diplomatic relations.
Yes, I agree my title was a bit too light for such a momentous event - but the new title is may not be strictly true. The memorandum between Iraq and Syria is a promise to set up embassies etc, and could be said to re-estalish diplomatic relations after a break. I am not too sure about the status of relations between Iraq and Iran, whether they were ever broken or whether this proposed meeting actually restores them. I think Presidents of both have been meeting before. Unfortunately I cannot linger to research this. Best wishes Fentonrobb 21:42, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

On Not News Articles
Thanks for the comment, Paul. The more I thought about them, especially the article about the fire issues, the more I could see the POV issues, yes. Also, the problem is that they are not citing any sources at all, and have no original reporting notes. Also, as you noted, it has a by-line which we don't do (I should have taken that out).
What I think probably happened here, honestly, is that someone new came in here with no particular account, and submitted the story. I wouldn't be shocked if it was lifted from somewhere else, but I have no proof of that. Without sources, or OR notes, we can't publish it as it is, no. What is worse is that I wouldn't be surprised if the original poster never knows about the problems in the article and never can make an attempt to fix them.
That being said, something like this potentially smacks of original reporting which is something that I'd love to be able to encourage where possible. I think the stories themselves, written to our style, and properly attributed, could be regarded as news.
I'm about to submit a story which is not from the world headlines, and has OR aspects to it. I'll be interesting to see what the community response is.
Your comments, as always, Paul, are appreciated!! -Richard 'Doc' Kinne 18:36, 25 November 2006 (UTC)
Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas, Skenmy/Archive 1! I have really enjoyed working with you this year, and I am honestly looking forward to another year just like it. Wikinews is a great community, and I am really excited to be a part of it. Again, Merry Christmas! Thunderhead |
Merry Christmas!
FellowWikiNews is whishing thou a Merry realised they had and therefore DEMANDS you have yourself a Merry Christmas... NOW! Failure to comply will result in going to jail with Santa. (Note: Santa is Satan spelt backwards)! Christmas Story (Children Friendly): So kids, is Santa Democrat or Republican??! Often depicted as an obese man wearing a tasteless red, ermine trimmed suit, Santa Claus is a self-employed Caucasian male who's been married to the same woman for several centuries. It appears likely that he is a churchgoer, insofar as he is a Catholic saint and a former bishop. It has to be assumed here that Claus was released from his vows, or else he would not have been married. Frequent arguments have erupted over the political affiliation of Claus. Ten years ago, Dick Cheney inadvertently dealt a savage blow to the morale of the Republican Party when he misidentified the political affiliation of Santa Claus in his best-selling book, Parliament of Whores. "Santa Claus," he said, "is a Democrat." However it is perfectly obvious from his demographic profile alone that Santa is in fact a Republican. This assessment is often rebutted by Democrats with Anne-McCaffery counter-analysis: Santa Claus has no children. High-achieving professionals without children trend Democratic. While the Clausian canon does not specifically address the issue of Santa's children, numerous extra-canonical sources suggest that Claus did, in fact, reproduce. Numerous Christmas TV movie specials alone support this point. Santa is renowned for an aggressive adherence to a binary naughty/nice list, which suggests an impatience for nuanced moral positions that betrays his Republican preferences. Santa's mere willingness to define individuals along a naughty/nice axis demonstrates his indifference to the philosophical stance of, say, The New York Times. And note that no canonical or extra-canonical Clausian text indicates that Santa ever attended college or, God forbid, graduate school. THE END!!! FellowWikiNews approves of this story. |
Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas! Wishing you all the best for the forthcoming year. --Brian McNeil / talk 16:19, 23 December 2006 (UTC)
