Welcome

[edit]

TownCrier, welcome to Wikinews! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

Our key policies - if you read anything, read these!

Here a few pointers to help you get to know Wikinews:

There are always things to do on Wikinews:

By the way, you can sign your name on Talk pages using four tildes (~~~~), which produces your name and the current date. If you have any questions, you can ask them at the water cooler or to anyone on the Welcommittee, or ask me on my Talk page. Again, welcome!—FellowWikiNews (W) 21:16, 26 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

I would like to thank you for your contributions to Wikinews. However, it is recommended that you use the preview button before you save; this helps you find any errors you have made, and prevents clogging up recent changes and the page history. Thanks again. —FellowWikiNews (W) 21:16, 26 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Re: Ariel Sharon

[edit]

I do agree with you on the Ariel Sharon article. Unfortunately, I can't do anything about it but mabie argue on the talk page... —FellowWikiNews (W) 22:10, 27 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

It is the nature of news that we have prepared obituaries lying around. The main difference between a wiki and, say, the BBC is that you can't see the BBC's article before the person dies. --Brian McNeil / talk 22:29, 27 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
I get your point totaly. But its just sick and we have to devise a way that this shouldnt sicken the ordinary browser who comes in here fishing around, like me. In other words, I think this like many other issues need to be addressed. TownCrier 02:12, 28 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
I totaly agree with TownCrier. There are already three obituaries in the newsroom. Mabie we should open discussion at the water cooler? —FellowWikiNews (W) 00:11, 29 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

[edit]

You're welcome to try, I agree that it could be better, the problem is getting people to agree on whats better. Our (relativly) recent change to change the header from the old half box, to one more similiar to what wikipedia uses was the first change in a long time, and thats because it was done using the its easier to get apoligies then permission ideology. (which worked well in this case). Anyways, please create your design at special:mypage/redesign (or any where else in your userspace). and remember to put [[category:sandbox]] which marks it as a redesign, and then will automaticlly make sure its listed with the others. Anyways, some thoughts on your ideas, which you said on my talk (Take anything I say here with a grain of salt/i'm not a designer I don't know what I'm talking about/standard disclaimer etc)

  • More stories on the main page
    • I'm assuming you mean leads (as opossed to the list of previous days' news), that's not a bad idea, if you can fit them in somewhere that looks pretty
  • Bigger pict for Lead
    • Thats very easily done, I'd suggest bringing it up at the water cooler under proposals section. If you think any specific pict is to small you can manually make it bigger (template:Lead article).
  • News caegories
    • Be specific, we have a bit of thoose already. On the header we have a bunch of places, as well as the main topics. In addition we have browse articles under the navagation portlet(sidebar), as well as the regions portlet
  • Change fonts back to Arial
    • I really don't care one way or another as long as there's consitancy (One title arial, one title some fantasy font, and one title fixed width IS a BAD idea) Isn't there some rule about that if title is serif, then body should be sans-serif vice versa? Also keep in mind that not everyone has all fonts installed on their computer, although arial's fairly common, we should still have generic fonts as backup.
  • Change the logo to look more like wikipedia's logo.
    • Good luck with that one. You'll proablly have better luck with trying to get someone to put a notice on all pages asking random visitors to give you money. I'm personally like our logo, and I think others agree. Also Wikipedia is not the same as Wikinews. We are two seperate projects with different goals. (However we're both owned by the Wikimedia foundation, and most contributors at the very least have an account, if not active at wikipedia). But your welcome to try and come up with a new logo. (well, Wikibooks, wikiversity, and wiktionary just got a new logo, so it could happen).

Anyways, some links that you may find useful:

P.S Also consider the different skins (In Firefox or Opera goto view→Page Style→ pick one (my favourite is Datrio+MrM) for the css skins. for the real skins special:preferences. If your using Microsoft internet explorer its a little more complicated

P.P.S If you need any help, or have any questions relating to this or anything else, don't be afraid to ask.

Happy editing. Bawolff 07:19, 29 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
