Welcome[edit]

Wimtennis2005, welcome to Wikinews! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

Our key policies - if you read anything, read these!

Here a few pointers to help you get to know Wikinews:

There are always things to do on Wikinews:

By the way, you can sign your name on Talk pages using four tildes (~~~~), which produces your name and the current date. If you have any questions, you can ask them at the water cooler or to anyone on the Welcommittee, or ask me on my Talk page. Again, welcome! → CGorman (Talk) 8 July 2005 22:03 (UTC)

Tiny articles[edit]

Can I ask you to write articles, rather than just putting a title and a link? No-one else is going to write it for you. Dan100 (Talk) 16:52, 12 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I will start doing that thanks for telling me. --Wimtennis2005 16:53, 12 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

In addtion to that (please start writing out the full articles!) may I ask that if you are creating articles, use a new title, and not one copied from what source you are using. Much easier Copyright wise to handle. Lyellin 19:15, 12 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Basically we just don't have the manpower to automagically expand submitted blurbs into full articles. We have maybe 15 people that work on this site regularly. Five of them concentrate on other mediums like print, or audio. That leaves 10 of us to do all the writing and editing. Each article generally takes 2-3 people to complete and about 3-4 manhours of work. Because wikinews doesn't pay us, we only have an hour or few to work on wikinews each day. It's actually incredible that we regularly output 10 articles per day. One day we'll be able to take submitted blurbs and expand them to full articles when we have 50-100 people working on the site every day...but for now what we need is people willing to write one or two articles per day, not submit 40 article ideas per day. Thanks a ton :) --RossKoepke 19:17, 12 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I will write as much as I can. --Wimtennis2005 19:20, 12 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hopefully at some point we will reach a critical mass where you can just link a few external sources and the content will get filled in by eager contributors for you. I'm glad you're off to a good start though. Keep plugging away at adding content; a good way to help is by working on developing stories that are already started by others. For instance, I rarely find time to add a new article of my own - what I usually do is copyedit articles that have a significant amount of content already in them. Often international contributors will write a lot but it will be in poor quality English, which is where native speakers like myself come in. - McCart42 (talk) 17:09, July 13, 2005 (UTC)

Re: Images[edit]

Images may be placed on all articles.

May I recommend you read up on Wikinews' policies on stuff like this? You seem to be getting rather a lot of complaints, which I agree with.

Goodgerster 21:47, 12 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Please don't create a large number of articles that consist of nothing more than a link to an external website. These fill up the list of Template:Developing stories, and are only going to be speedy-deleted the next day. Your contributions to Wikinews are welcome, but please develop one story at a time at least to a paragraph or so of length.--Eloquence 19:15, 13 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Third warning[edit]

I'm the fifth contributor and the third admin to ask you to stop producing empty articles. At this point you are approaching vandal status. Do not continue to produce empty articles. Thank you. - Amgine/talk 19:38, 13 July 2005 (UTC)

thanks for letting me know --Wimtennis2005 19:39, 13 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Some of your pages consisted of copy and pasted text from other sources. This is a copyright violation and not allowed; I have deleted those pages. The other pages you created are now unlisted from the Main Page and will also likely be deleted soon. Please write new articles from scratch. Thanks,--Eloquence 19:56, 13 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Can I add the sources? --Wimtennis2005 19:56, 13 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

What do you mean, can you add the sources? To where? Please read Wikinews:Writing an article carefully, it contains some useful tips for getting started around here.--Eloquence 19:57, 13 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

To the article??? --Wimtennis2005 19:58, 13 July 2005 (UTC) Author and published??? Information??[reply]

I'm sorry, I can't follow you. Could you describe in complete sentences what you are trying to do?--Eloquence 20:12, 13 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
He means to say that if he adds his sources, would it still be a copyvio? Answer: Yes. We can't just copy other people's work and then cite the author and say "Hey it's not illegal! We cited our sources!". It's still illegal. We can only publish original writing (which is different from original reporting).--RossKoepke 16:47, 14 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The link is where i put url source. That's what it says. --Wimtennis2005 16:51, 14 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Copyright violation[edit]

Wimtennis2005, your articles have the exact same name as those of your sources. Please remember that it is illegal do copy and text verbatim from another source, unless it's public domain (which is pretty much just government work). Happy writing! -- NGerda 16:54, July 14, 2005 (UTC)
