Australia Portal (or whatever we call it)[edit]

I've made some changes to the Australia page. This page now shows published Australian articles and also developing Australian articles, so if you're not interested in anything else you can just look at this page. - Borofkin 03:08, 6 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, looks nice. :) I've seen some good Aussie news stories here recently, thanks very much to those writing, and keep up the good work. -- Simeon 01:23, 20 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Should there be some effort to harness photographers ?[edit]

  • Just wondering (thought perhaps this belongs in a different area). In any case I am happy to shoot anything in the lower north shore area or supply some "themed" shots under CC if needed. - SirFlakey @ 26 September 2005
Definitely we need photographers. For example, this article could have used a picture of a petrol price sign, but no-one got around to taking it. And this one could have used any picture of a CityRail train. - Borofkin 00:38, 28 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Rightio - I'll add an area to my gallery site for this purpose (or maybe use the commons ? not sure yet), speed is somewhat an issue with news so I'll need to think how the request->photo process can be made efficient. Obviously if just *any* photo of a petrol price sign we could use things such as the "Stock Exchange site. -- SirFlakey 12:33, 1 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
The pictures are most convenient to use if they are on Commons - that way they can be used in Wikinews and Wikipedia articles by just adding a tag. Remember that you have to license the pictures under one of the licenses acceptable to Commons. - Borofkin 23:59, 3 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Volunteer photographers[edit]

Protest this Saturday in Sydney[edit]

There is a protest this Saturday in Belmore Park, opposite Central. Is anyone going along? http://www.stopwarcoalition.org/ - Borofkin 22:47, 2 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Google News & RSS/CSS feed[edit]

I was just wondering why wikinews never appears on http://news.google.com/ it would increase traffic significantly especially with some of the quality reporting going on here and so would adding the RSS feed to the australian site. Adding the css to forums has been touted on as being a great way of increasing traffic and its on the main page so why not get one for australia? It saves alot of time for people who dont have time to be hanging around wiki all day.--Whywhywhy 02:33, 3 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

It appeared at one point, but then it stopped. I'm not sure what Google's criteria is for inclusion of a source. There has been discussion about Google News on the water cooler in the past, you may want to do a search there. - Borofkin 04:19, 3 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Google wishes for a fixed version of articles to be available before allowing WN articles to appear, due to worries regarding vandalism, misinformation. Since this is specific to wiki-based news (they do not mind updates by bloggers and other news sources) one has to assume they're afraid of the wikiness of the site. - User:Amgine (not logged in...)

Quite a week[edit]

It's been a solid week for Aussie articles. Not a bad job at all, especially the original reporting ones....

Anti-war and civil rights protest tommorrow[edit]

I'm probably going to go along to the Sydney event. There are gatherings in most capital cities. Have a look at the Stop The War Coalition website for more information. If anyone is going, have a think about taking a camera or tape recorder (or even just a notebook) and doing a bit of original reporting. - Borofkin 00:31, 4 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Australian government media releases[edit]

You can get get government media releases by email here: http://www.australia.gov.au/media - Borofkin 21:35, 6 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

11 November anniversary[edit]

I am just starting in this wiki project so please allow me some newbie tolerance :-) I have started to develop an article on the anniversary of the Whitlam sacking at: Thirtieth anniversary of Australia's constitutional crisis --AYArktos 21:10, 10 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

It looks good so far. You're doing much better than most newbies. :-) - Borofkin 22:48, 10 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
  • I have just reverted an "NPOV" addition that in my opinion was the opposite of NPOV. On this subject few people take Pilger seriously. His comments and Boyce's alleged role were entirely neglected by the mainstream media yesterday. This article was about the anniversary, not the event itself. --AYArktos 19:46, 11 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Need help with some original reporting[edit]

I have a number of sources to follow up regarding this article: Australian government accused of hypocrisy over World Court statement. If there is anyone who wants to help by ringing people and conducting phone interviews, please leave a message on my talk page. - Borofkin 00:31, 11 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Industrial Relations Action - November 15[edit]

If anyone is interested in helping out with reporting for the actions on November 15, please leave a note here. There is more information at the ACTU website. You don't need to be going to the main rally in Sydney, reporting or pictures from one of the hookup sites would be excellent. - Borofkin 05:45, 11 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I will see what I can do in Canberrra - I don't promise but if I get a chance I will contribute--AYArktos 07:33, 13 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
How's this? More available, but this gave the best impression of the number of people there (lots!) 2005-11-15 Australian Industrial Relations reform protests in Melbourne, from within Flinders Street Station looking towards the speakers at Federation Square. Josh Parris 23:52, 14 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Fine work so far on this article. Congratulations to everyone who has contributed. - Borofkin 05:50, 15 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

This was a perfect example of the power of the Wiki. Everybody collaborated well, and worked with each other on the talk page to sort out disagreements. A fine effort... well done to Elliot K, CitizenBruce, Josh Parris, Whywhywhy, BenAveling, and numerous anonymous contributors. - Borofkin 01:35, 16 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

is it just me or does the last story published keep sitting in the development section--Whywhywhy 10:04, 19 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

If you mean the article you just wrote, no. That story is on top of the latest news. --Deprifry|+T+ 10:06, 19 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

not in my brower and i keep perging before my article it was Rumsfeld's Australia visit sparks protests and i noticed it a while ago with another article. i use firefox.--Whywhywhy 13:04, 19 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm, me too. Did you try purging this way? --Deprifry|+T+ 13:29, 19 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

yes i did but i have now reset my computer and the problem has stoped for now.--Whywhywhy 22:48, 19 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Wackynews gone?[edit]

Where has it dissapeared from? There is still Category:Wackynews. - Borofkin 23:21, 21 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

didnt it use to be on the australian page--Whywhywhy 01:45, 22 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
