The Polish Wikinews Press Photo 2011 was a contest aimed to choose "the best photographs taken by Wikinewsies or Wikimedians, and used in Wikinews articles in 2010." The contest was inspired by our own English Wikinews' Picture of the Year, which hasn't worked for about three years, and its name refers to the global photographers competition World Press Photo.
The competition
[edit]The competition consisted of two phases, which were the same for both categories: Global Wikinews (pictures from any Wikinews project, including the English version), and Polish Wikinews-only.
The first phase
[edit]The first phase lasted from January 28, 2011, until February 10 midnight.
Eighteen pictures were nominated for the Polish Wikinews-only category, only six of them made it to the finals; while eight pictures from other Wikinews versions were nominated, including the main picture of English Wikinews' article Chilean earthquakes: in pictures. Four of them passed to the final round.
