  • these are more questions than statements. it would be cool if we could assign one or more participants to cover each event. also, maybe we can ask wikimania team to assign a scholarship to a wikinews person who could be in charge of managing coverage for wikimania. also, it would be cool if we consider doing a daily email blast covering major points, and linking to articles written the previous day. however, we would need to start creating a email bank pretty soon. anyway, is there anyone on wikinews that is on the wikimania planning committee? we might want to consider asking for addition, if not. so I wanted to get a few things started on Wikinews.

  • User:Cspurrier is already going: anybody else?
    • Should we recruit people to get wide original reporting from Wikimania?
  • I think we should have either a panel (2-5 speakers discussing with audience input) or a presentation (10-30 minutes with discussion afterwards) devoted to Wikinews. Possible subjects:
    • Introducing Wikinews: project particularities (such as original reporting and accreditation, archiving, video's, reporter's blog and wikinewsie.org, comments tab, cc-license, quiz, automated weather, Wikinews importer bot, article translation and international editions, community dynamics, ...)
    • Another angle: A wiki approach to journalism: blessing or curse? (again emphasising differences with Wikipedia and restrictions we face vs advantages we have because we are in the Wikimedia family; e.g. original reporting, rich media, Wikipedia as a news source, editor emails and blog, our reputation as a news source for the outside world)
    • Another angle: Wikinews: past, present and future (how the project has changed since the beginning, which projects and ideas were started over the years, current developments and future challenges).

I think we should move this to a separate page and work on building several of the talking points - not just with a view to a presentation or panel at Wikimania, but as useful points to send any press queries to for reference material. Last week I did a skype interview with a journalist who is doing a magazine piece on "Wikinews at a crossroads". He also interviewed David Shankbone face to face and IIRC DragonFire1024 by phone. The material being proposed here would be an ideal set of data to refer anyone else interested in reporting on us to. --Brian McNeil / talk 09:12, 26 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Considering how inactive Craig has been on Wikinews recently, I don't think he should be the one to speak about Wikinews today. I'd rather someone who is more of an active presence speak. TheCustomOfLife - (talk) 22:13, 26 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
