Dated[edit]

This image should have a date on it for use on Wikinews. It is a part of the news that the current state of flu spread be related to the time of article publication.

For infoboxes and portal-type pages the map on Commons should be used as it is regularly updated. Use in articles must involve duplicating the image locally with a datestamp in the filename. --Brian McNeil / talk 10:36, 14 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

As you note, it is important to be aware that this map is being constantly updated. For most projects where it will be being used, that will be desired but for articles the map needs to reflect the time at which the article was written. In those cases, a copy of the image should be taken and uploaded to Commons with the date in the name. They don't need to be uploaded locally since they would fall within the scope of Commons even if some might not initially realise why they are important. It would probably be helpful to explain in the image description why it has been uploaded.
It appears this image is included in a number of articles. It is probably appropriate to work through each of these and change the image to a copy from the same date and where the particular revision matches the information in the article. Perhaps a warning that images might be updated in such a way which whilst acceptable to most projects, might not be appropriate for a news article, should be added into our guidelines for example Wikinews:Style guide and/or Wikinews:Writing an article.
