Yesterday, Todd in the Shadows released his video of his official picks for the top ten best songs of 2020. In sharp contrast to the year, which will, for most people, forever be tied to the COVID-19 pandemic, widespread cancellations and lockdowns, and the George Floyd protests, 2020 was a fantastic year for pop music. Todd in the Shadows loved last year, well, music-wise anyways, so much and has found so many songs to love last year that he nearly made a top twenty instead of a top ten, and he was forced to make many difficult cuts this year.

If you have a thing for “key of G” songs, and you were disappointed that masterpieces such as Jessie J’s “Domino” and Maroon 5’s “Animals” have been showing up on Todd’s “worst songs” lists, 2020 was the year that restored faith in “key of G” songs. The new Miley Cyrus song, “Midnight Sky” took #4 on Todd’s “best hit songs of 2020.”

In terms of pop music, 2020 was the opposite of 2014. In 2014, which was one of Todd’s least favorite years in pop music, he enjoyed far less music than usual and nearly had to settle for making a top 9 instead of a top ten list. Last year, Todd instead loved way too many songs and had to make lots of painful, challenging cuts from the list. As he said, there were many songs that could’ve easily made the upper half of his list (his top five songs of the year) in other years but, in 2020, didn’t make the list. In terms of the key of G, 2020 was an inverse of 2014 from the perspective of numerical scores. In 2014, there were five songs in G that made the “worst hits” list, out of a total of 17 songs (10 ranked songs + 7 dishonorable mentions), while no “key of G” song made the “best hits” list that year. In 2020, the roles were reversed. Out of the 18 songs listed in the “best hits of 2020” video, ten ranked songs and eight honorable mentions, five of them (27.778%) are in the key of G. Meanwhile, no song in the key of G appeared on the “worst hits” list, making 2020 the third straight year in which no “key of G” song appeared on Todd’s “worst hits” list. Consistent with our hypothesis that the key alone is not correlated with reception by Todd, twenty-nine (29) songs in the key of G have appeared on Todd’s annual year-end lists since 2011. As is to be expected, it was half and half. Fifteen songs in this key appeared on a “best hits” list (51.7%), while 14 appeared on a “worst hits” list (48.3%).
