It's finally here! Today, Nicholas Light, a popular and renowned "song reaction" YouTuber, reacted to Miley Cyrus' latest album, Plastic Hearts. This album, released last November, features the song "Midnight Sky", which peaked at #14 in its third week, the week of August 29, 2020. "Midnight Sky" received universal acclaim by music critics, many of whom included the track on their lists of the best songs of 2020. In a ranking on Capital FM, "Midnight Sky" took #5. Sam Prance, writing for Capital FM, wrote this of the song: "Miley Cyrus did what needed to be done with 'Midnight Sky'. The song is an arena pop rock anthem designed to be screamed at stadiums and Miley has never sounded more at home. Lyrically, she opens up about the breakdown of her past relationships as she celebrates her freedom. When she sings 'I don't need to be loved by you' in the chorus, you believe it. The single interpolates 'Edge of Seventeen' by Stevie Nicks and there's a remix featuring Stevie herself. Miley's past work has always hinted that she could become a modern-day rock icon; on 'Midnight Sky' she fulfils her destiny." Todd in the Shadows, a popular pop music critic, ranked it as his fourth favorite hit song of 2020. Todd has had a complicated history with Miley Cyrus. For most of Miley's career, extending over 15 years to date, Todd considered Miley to be overrated; he hated "The Climb", a song most people, and not just Miley Cyrus fans, used as a motivational song to keep trying to chase their dreams, to learn from difficult times, and come out stronger on the other side. This continued with "Party In The USA", and then with "We Can't Stop" and "Wrecking Ball." In 2019, Todd had found renewed hope in Miley, deciding that Miley needed to "find the right sound" and "something that fit her." In the words of Todd, "in 2020, she finally found it." He praised the 80s retro sound and the lyrics, even going on to say that this song singlehandedly "revitalized her career." The line, "I was born to run, I don't belong to anyone" is simply beautiful. After everything Miley has gone through to get to this point, Todd firmly believes Miley has earned the right to say that about herself.
