this is horrible. I can't believe it. I wish I could do something 66.177.138.113 01:44, 12 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

This is sick

Yes, and these numbers don't even includes all the people who are not technically slaves because they are paid and are "free" to leave, but in practice they are pretty much slaves. Oh wait, maybe it does. Anyway, very sad. MikeCapone 04:52, 12 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know whether this is newsworthy, but it's definitely not "Breaking News!". Breaking news would be some urgent event of great significance or something like that. This is just a statistic released regularly by ILO --131.252.209.244 00:24, 13 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

When a governmental body or NGO or corporation releases its statistical compilations (unemployment rate, housing starts, AIDS victim estimates, earnings reports) at regular intervals, it still gets reported as news -- so why not this one?

As for Mike's comment: involuntary servitude (often on pain of immediate, violent death) is in no way comparable to "wage slavery." There's no such thing as a utopia where most people don't have to engage in unpleasant, minimally rewarding work. Even hunter-gatherers have to work a few hours a day, and they enjoy far less material comfort than even the most deeply impoverished modern urban dweller. Suppose you're stuck at Wal-Mart and you can't quit or you won't be able to pay the rent or buy groceries. Are you really in the same category as a guy digging Coltan in a mosquito-infested jungle with an AK-47 pressed to his temple, who would gladly trade places with you in your clean, well-lit store for $8.25/hr? No, you're not -- not at all.--69.245.192.52 03:44, 13 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Well, it's great to see people talking about an article this way. I happened to stumble upon the source article while I was doing research on the BBC's web site. Hopefully, we'll have more article like this in the future. NGerda 04:48, 13 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Sweatshop Poetry[edit]

  • Okay this is a good start, posting stuff like this is what the mainstream press definitely misses. Now what we need are links to discussions about how to slow/stop/prevent/rally against this curse. What governments are the worse about letting this happen on their soil? Next comes the companies that are profiting from this. What groups are already engaged in moving against this? Great start. 70.176.187.122 14:05, 13 May 2005
  • This poem does not belong here on Wikinews. There's a perfectly good Modern Poetry section on Wikisource for taking GFDL poetry. Uncle G 16:51, 13 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]
