Yes, and these numbers don't even includes all the people who are not technically slaves because they are paid and are "free" to leave, but in practice they are pretty much slaves. Oh wait, maybe it does. Anyway, very sad. MikeCapone 04:52, 12 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

When a governmental body or NGO or corporation releases its statistical compilations (unemployment rate, housing starts, AIDS victim estimates, earnings reports) at regular intervals, it still gets reported as news -- so why not this one?

As for Mike's comment: involuntary servitude (often on pain of immediate, violent death) is in no way comparable to "wage slavery." There's no such thing as a utopia where most people don't have to engage in unpleasant, minimally rewarding work. Even hunter-gatherers have to work a few hours a day, and they enjoy far less material comfort than even the most deeply impoverished modern urban dweller. Suppose you're stuck at Wal-Mart and you can't quit or you won't be able to pay the rent or buy groceries. Are you really in the same category as a guy digging Coltan in a mosquito-infested jungle with an AK-47 pressed to his temple, who would gladly trade places with you in your clean, well-lit store for $8.25/hr? Now what we need are links to discussions about how to slow/stop/prevent/rally against this curse. What governments are the worse about letting this happen on their soil?
