Sources[edit]

@SVTCobra: Can you please add a source specifically on the focal event? It...um...appears I missed that there was only one. Heavy Water (talk) 00:02, 6 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

@SVTCobra,
I'm trying to get familiar with Wikinews project and I'm reading some rules and guidelines right now.
I'm currently on Wikinews:Neutral_point_of_view and the title of the article seems quite biased to me.

As far as I understand the published articles cannot or shouldn't be edited but I wonder how wikinews deals with such cases?
I see you made the article and you are the person who approved it.
Is it ok and good practice in wikinews?
Why there are no any source that support "peace activist" part?

The title is very much one-side tilted and I believe it could be tilted less. At least rules do seem require it.

My apologies if these questions are kinda strange but I feel like I have to ask them.

Thanks Paul Pelenov (talk) 07:06, 28 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
I believe I failed to detect who reviewed this article.
Happy to see the person who made an article cannot or at least do not usually approve they own articles.

I still wonder though if such a title is considered unbiased by wikimedia standards Paul Pelenov (talk) 07:20, 28 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
Hi Paul. I do my utmost to stay objective and in line with WN:NPOV, especially on topics where I may have my own opinions. And, yes, since 2009, all articles are reviewed by another trusted editor before they are published.
If I am understanding you correctly, you are objecting to Darya Trepova being referred to as a 'peace activist' and 'anti-war activist'? This is based on her documented history of being detained at anti-war protests. Certainly, if Trepova is guilty of this crime, it would not be a peaceful action. But for now, she is only accused of being the perpetrator ... these are allegations. I don't think it can be disputed that Maxim Fomin (Vladlen Tatarsky) was pro-war. I do not think the article or its title are biased. CNN has a similar description. What is "tilted" about the title? What would you suggest as a more neutral title? SVTCobra 12:15, 28 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
Here is the quote from the RFE/RL source I based it on "[Trepova] has been described in Russian media as a Russian national and St. Petersburg resident who had been previously detained for taking part in anti-war rallies." Cheers, SVTCobra 12:43, 28 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
I unfortunately couldn't find anything about her and her anti-war rallies before the incident with Tatarsky but at the same time I do understand that wikinews is not a fact checking website.
And according to RFE/RL quote you shared she is anti-war activist so I have no further questions here and it totally make sense.

Thanks for your explanations here.

I don't think it can be disputed that Tatarsky was pro-war either and I can find a bunch of evidence of that.

The "tilted" title in my opinion is when it sounds like X charges GOOD-Y (anti-war) for association of BAD-Z (pro-war). It automatically makes X bad in that particular title. It can be treated as "doesn't make X bad" too but there are other titles that can remove this confusion completely.

Less tilted title in my opinion would be something similar to what mentioned in sources section:
  • Russian Cafe Bomb Suspect Charged With Terrorism
  • Russia Charges Woman With Terrorism Over Cafe Bombing That Killed War Blogger
  • Russia charges a suspect in assassination of pro-war blogger in Saint Petersburg
  • Russia charges woman in assassination of pro-war blogger in Saint Petersburg

Thanks for you explanations again. Paul Pelenov (talk) 13:36, 28 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
(I'm the reviewer, by the way — the reviewer's username is visible at the top center of the review template above): Russian Cafe Bomb Suspect Charged With Terrorism is in the passive voice, which Wikinews avoids — is Zimbabwe charging her? — and it otherwise is just an alternative order of listing facts about the case, as the last three are. I don't see how this title makes the prosecuting authority look bad. Heavy Water (talk) 13:56, 28 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
Hi @Heavy Water,
I noticed your name after my initial question about the approve process. I'm happy to see the approve process works the way it does.
Thanks for letting me know about passive voice avoidance. It definitely make sense.
I don't think three other titles difference is in "order of listing facts".

In any case yours and SVTCobra's explanations are important for me and they help me build a mental picture of this place and its participants (I'm new here and I need this picture).
Thanks Paul Pelenov (talk) 14:10, 28 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
Hi Paul. In regard to your XYZ example, I disagree that it makes X a bad entity. We have used that style many times before. Here's a couple of examples: United States charges eleven in credit card fraud case and US charges homeless man after plane stolen and crashed in Maryland.
Yes, I don't think you would find anything about Trepova before this incident. She was just one of thousands detained in those protests. One does not need to be a prominent figure to be an activist. The title states she is charged for an assassination. I fail to see how that paints her as a good person even with the description as a peace activist. I think the title is better for it because it suggests an inherent motive for the act, rather than generic terms such as "woman" or "suspect". It did make me chuckle because Vladlen Tatarsky became the Z in your example. Cheers, SVTCobra 15:05, 28 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
Yeah the Z thing with Tatarsky was quite a symbolic incident. Paul Pelenov (talk) 15:18, 28 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
