Avoid for 1 000 except in direct quotes, and in SI abbreviations such as km, kg.

Kant, Immanuel [edit]

Not Emmanuel.

Karadžić, Radovan [edit]

Then Dr Karadžić after first mention, for the psychiatrist and war crimes suspect. Note the accents.

Kentucky Fried Chicken [edit]

The company has rebranded as KFC, so the full caps title should only be used in historical contexts.

kerosene [edit]

North American term for paraffin. A colorless, odorless fuel.

key [edit]

Almost always use is clichéd; avoid where possible. Allowable for major or minor keys, as well as in association with locks or ciphers.

kick-start [edit]

Do not use except in regard to motorcycles.

kilobyte [edit]

Abbreviate to kB, but note megabyte (MB), gigabyte (GB), and terabyte (TB).

kilogram [edit]

Not kilogramme, abbreviate to kg. See SI.

kilometre [edit]

Not kilometer. (Note: kilometer is a US spelling which is deprecated because the US does not even use the km officially.) See SI.

kilometres per hour [edit]

Abbreviate to km/h, not kph. See SI.

kilowatt hour [edit]

Abbreviate to kWh. See SI.

kneejerk [edit]

Prefer without hyphen or space.

knockout [edit]

Noun with neither space nor hyphen, but to knock out as verb, with knock being conjugated.

know-how [edit]

Preferred with hyphen for noun.

Koran [edit]

Do not use. Prefer Qur'an.

Kosovo, Kosovan [edit]

Prefer Kosovan, not Kosovar.

Kurdistan [edit]

Do not use. Use Iraqi Kurdistan for the Iraqi federal entity. All other portions of the Zagros and Taurus mountain ranges - elements of ancient Corduene - do not have any recognition as a Kurdish state.

Kurdistan Worker's Party [edit]

Not Kuridstan Workers' Party, in Kurdish Partiya Karkerên Kurdistan thus abbreviate PKK. The PKK is identified by the United Nations, and other national and international entities, as a terrorist organization.

Kyoto Protocol [edit]

Capitalize protocol.
