Today the English language version of Wikipedia, a free content online encyclopedia, has published its 2.5 millionth article, according to an announcement on the Wikipedia Main Page.

On the Main Page of Wikipedia a message was posted saying that "the English-language Wikipedia thanks its contributors for creating over 2,500,000 articles."

Although the reaction upon Wikipedians was mostly celebratory after the announcement that the milestone had been reached, some users expressed concern. "I believe that Wikipedia will become increasingly distrusted as a source of accurate information," said Wikipedia user Annette46.

Wikinews spoke to ?, a spokesperson for the Wikimedia Foundation. They told Wikinews in a statement that "?"

The 2.5 millionth article was created at 22:30 UTC yesterday. This means that the 2.5 millionth article could be anyone of the 30 articles created at that minute. Wikinews does not know which one of these is the 2.5 millionth article.

It is possible that the number of Wikipedia articles will increase dramatically in the near future, due to the proposed installation of an article creating robot on the project. If Wikipedia editors approve the bot, 1.8 million new articles on small geographical locations may be created on Wikipedia.
