Former United States president Jimmy Carter has died today, after a months-long stay in hospice care. He was 99 years old.
Carter was a former naval officer, farmer, and Georgia state politician whose long-shot candidacy resulted in him being elected the President of the United States in 1976. After serving a single term in office, Carter devoted himself to international aid and development, creating the Carter Center and working with many non-profits globally, including Habitat for Humanity.
James Earl Carter Jr was born October 1, 1924 in Plains, Georgia. After high school, Carter attended the United States Naval Academy and entered the Navy from 1948 to 1953, until the death of Carter's father led him back to the family farm. Carter was able to turn the struggling farm into a successful business over the next decade.
Carter served his local school board, where he became increasingly vocal in his opposition to racial segregation. In 1962, he decided to run for a seat in the Georgia State Senate and won after a two-week campaign and a fraudulent election that was redone without interference. After four years as a legislator, Carter unsuccessfully ran for governor. He won a 1971 campaign and set his sights on the presidency in 1976.
