Question

Text should only be copied from Wikipedia into Wikinews when the original source was from the public domain.

The license for Wikinews has not been settled yet, so everything on this site can be freely copied.

On Wikipedia, they have a GFDL license, which requires attribution of the original author, links to the source, and other requirements described on that site's copy of the license.

A few pieces of copied text have probably slipped through the cracks in the past, but going forward, contributors should rewrite any text from Wikipedia in their own words.

However, the larger issue you might encounter is that a few of the contributors here on Wikinews might object if a news article appears "encyclopedic". I try to keep historical context to a minimum in the stories I write, usually only a line or two, and then link to the related Wikipedia articles throughout the piece I am working on.

India aircraft carrier story

I appreciate the India aircraft carrier story, but the article is reporting on more than one thing.

The bit about China deserves its own article. It's confusing to the reader to suddenly be reading about something else.

Also, I read the linked articles, but missed the assertion that nine countries have this capability. We need a source for this assertion.

Finally, the inline references to external sites are rather opaque. It would be easier to understand the external references by moving them into the Sources section at the end of the article. (This allows the citation to list its title and publisher, so the reader can decide which ones may be worth reading. Numbered external links aren't very inviting.)

If you don't get around to expanding the sources section, I'll wait a bit to avoid overwriting your edits and make those changes myself. — DV 08:52, 26 Mar 2005 (UTC)

China's military budget increase

Thanks for moving the China bit out of the India article. It didn't seem directly related.

A working group submitted an increase for the Chinese military budget at the recent National People's Congress in Beijing, so if you want to develop a separate article about China's military growth, it would be nice to include that recent development to make it more newsworthy. Are we both watching the same channel on TV? I'm watching the Taiwan Domestic Newshour on ETTV. It's a HUGE march.
