Getting started as a contributor
|
|
Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally. |

All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.
Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere. The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing. Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly. |

Places to go, people to meet
Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion. There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project. |

Articles with non-English sources [edit]
German hotels initiate boycott against online travel agency HRS; German court declares best price guarantee of German online travel agency void.
Hi. We have to be able to review an article if we're to publish it, and non-English sources present a serious problem (unless a qualified reviewer happens to be available who reads the source language). As a practical matter, we've been able —with much effort— to manage sometimes if the only things drawn from the non-English sources are direct quotes, for which fluent English translations are provided by the (reputable) author and we can cross-check their plausibility using the (frankly, otherwise useless) poor automated translation facilities available.
I rated both articles not ready when reviewed. See the review comments for both articles, here and here. --Pi zero (talk) 14:09, 25 February 2012 (UTC)
German court declares best price guarantee of German online travel agency void [edit]
I wrote quite extensive review comments, because I really want to learn as much as possible from this. Review comments. --Pi zero (talk) 00:06, 1 March 2012 (UTC)
China asks Syrian regime and opposition to cease fire [edit]
Published. Congratulations! See the history of edits during review, and review comments. --Pi zero (talk) 22:59, 4 March 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks, but you have removed the whole point why Libya and the NATO are mentioned. The reason was that China may be reluctant to prevent a similar situation where they have authorized an UN resolution and then NATO forces use it as an excuse for bombing targets in the country. If you see that as opinion it was a sourced, not an unsourced opinion, because it was attributed to the Chicago Tribune/Reuters. I would also use "had" instead of "has" in several places in the article: "China had opposed two attempts ...". Turning the facts about the Red Cross into a sentence looks a bit to short, and detaches it from the statement of the Turkish minister, which it explains. You cannot possibly see this as opinion. The Red Cross was denied entry to Homs, the Turkish minister complains about this happening. The Deutsche Welle article stated that. By the way, the Deutsche Welle article has changed to "ICRC teams deliver Syria aid, but Homs access denied", which is a different article under the same URL. --Bernhard Fastenrath 10:33, 5 March 2012 (UTC)
- Apparently Deutsche Welle article are not very good as reliable links. In the German Wikinews some lasted for longer than a year, others did not. --Bernhard Fastenrath 10:42, 5 March 2012 (UTC)
- Many news sites change their articles, making the old versions inaccessible. This can cause us problems for review if it happens between when the article is written and when it is reviewed. However, the Sources section is a permanent record of where the information came from, and once the article has been reviewed, it is known to have been rigorously checked against the documented sources. After that, it doesn't matter that those sources may cease to be available anymore. Indeed, the sources of older articles in our archives often aren't available anymore, at least not without going through a paywall — but our articles continue to be freely available.

Novartis article [edit]
I see you steadfast efforts on this one....hang in there! Keep working! Bddpaux (talk) 04:50, 24 March 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks. Maybe you can give me a hint. I have sent interview requests to some people mentioned in Amensty International's Urgent Actions, but they didn't reply to my interview requests. I did use a footer that identified the request as coming from Wikinews. --Bernhard Fastenrath 13:35, 24 March 2012 (UTC)
