? This is a proposed policy. You can choose to follow it. If it is followed by all, and has wide community support, it may become an official policy. Please comment on the collaboration page of the policy on any changes you would like to make, or just edit the page directly. References or links to this page should not describe it as "policy".

Citing Wikipedia policy has been popular on Wikinews, however citing policies on a project not ours may be problematic. One particular problem is that Wikipedia has decided their own policy based on their consensus. Their consensus might not be our consensus, which would cause problems. This policy page outlines when and when not to.

The criteria on this page can be cited in the manner on Wikipedia's criteria for speedy deletion page, which assigns a number and a letter based on the categorization and the number of the criterion. "When to cite Wikipedia" criteria are to be cited as YX, where X is the number of the criterion. "When not to cite Wikipedia" criteria are to be cited as NX, where X is the number of the criterion.

Feel free to update as you please, but when eliminating a criterion, keep the number and note that its been deprecated, as well as its fate.

When to cite Wikipedia policy[edit]

  1. When the policy doesn't exist on Wikinews, and the community has not explicitly voted against using it. The exception is N1.
  2. When it has been approved by the Wikinews community and has been listed on a whitelist page.
  3. When the policy was propogated by the Wikimedia Foundation, unless otherwise noted.

When not to cite Wikipedia policy[edit]

  1. When we already have a policy page on the same topic: Notable example: Wikipedia has its own "what we're not" page, Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not. Nothing on that page may be cited because we already have our own "what we're not" page, Wikinews:What Wikinews is not. The exception is Y2.
  2. When the community has explicitly voted against citing it - This is synonymous to Y1.
