Current requests

Name: David Miller
Location: New York City
Areas of interest: Photography - New York City
Reason: I photograph for Wikimedia projects, and an area of focus is on news makers. There is often a press section for photographers at events, speeches, and other venues where people speak. Currently, the only Wikimedia project that offers accreditation is Wikinews, although my 1,000+ photographs are available for use to the Wikinews project via the Commons (David Shankbone contributions on the Commons). I have extensive editing on Wikipedia, and my Wikipedia user page shows how prolific I have been in adding high-quality images, including many portraits. Accreditation would vastly improve my access to events that happen here in New York.
Accomplishments: Tompkins Square Park Police Riot, Floyd Abrams, Public Art Fund, and Evan Wolfson.

Neutral - As per below.  Thunderhead  ►  22:05, 8 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • I'm mostly interested in contributing photographs. My photos of people like Ralph Nader, Angela Bassett, D. A. Pennebaker, Ron Wyden, Floyd Abrams (who represented Judith Miller, Al Franken against Fox News, et. al.), and other newsmakers are on the Dutch, German, French, Portuguese, Spanish and Italian Wikipedias. I have about 5,000 edits on the English Wikipedia, and a casual scroll through my user page there shows the potential for my photography on Wikinews. I also take requests, and I have a flexible job that, if given a heads up, can allow me to show up at an event (such as the protest of the 2006 Qana air strike.

Comment/Question- this brings us back into the whole acreditation for other wikis. the aim of accreditation is to allow you to say that you are an accreditated user of wikinews to help with the press application. this aims to help with OR but as your wikipedia userpage shows you already manage to get into many places without it. I would also like to say that (it seems) you are requesting accreditation to take photos - photos go on commons - then (possibly used) in an article here. however the article needs to be written for the pic to be used so the question arrises are you going to write the article and if so we have no idea of what quality it would be like. (think thats all for the mo :))--MarkieTalk 22:18, 8 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • I understand; but aren't photographs needed for Wikinews articles written by other editors? If another editor writes about Al Franken declaring his candidacy, does my Al Franken photograph not aid in their endeavor? And true, I have managed to get into some places to take photographs, but the potential to get in far, far more for both Wikinews and the larger Wikimedia project is, in my opinion, a pretty compelling reason to grant accreditation. And if an editor wants a photograph for an article they are writing, they likely will turn to the Commons. It seems like we aren't that dichotomized here; we all work in tandem. --David Shankbone 22:23, 8 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Neutral, we have nothing to judge you on - and the purpose of credentials from Wikinews is to contribute to Wikinews. This project is significantly different from others, and I'd be unhappy awarding credentials to someone who didn't show a knowledge of the issuing site's procedures and policies (i.e. a respectable edit count). --Brian McNeil / talk 22:21, 8 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • It seems to me that there are plenty of links to not only articles on events and news makers I've written for Wikipedia, but also my extensive photography. I don't see how Wikinews editors would not look to Commons photographers as compatriots? --David Shankbone 22:25, 8 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Neutral. I'd be happy to grant him a press card, but this really has to stop. We have to bring this up to the Wikimedia community, get Commons and Wikipedia involved and get some kind of Accredited Photographer status for Commons, because this really is not the intention of Wikinews, moreover I feel that we are too small a community to support requests that are really intended to benefit the whole of Wikimedia. I say we finally make work of the Meta:Press corps so these requests can stop.
Of course about the request: great contributor, would support him because he's clearly skilled and dedicated.--Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 22:54, 8 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Neutral You seem very skilled. I would totally support you to get the credentials. But like the others said, you should make some edits to Wikinews and look at our policy, etc. P.S. About your real name: I laughed when I seen it because David Miller is a famous mayor in Canada. FellowWikiNews (W) (sign here!) 23:24, 8 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • oppose I voted against the other hordes of commoners, I'm voting against you too. Nothing personal, but this process is for wikinewsies. Well we do need photographers, I don't belive that we should be accrediting random people who are not members of the wikinews comunity. Also I feel that we should discuss this with commons as a whole as well before we start acrediting their users. If you really want to be accredited, perhaps you should send a nice email to commons-l asking them to implement some form of accreditation. Bawolff 00:10, 9 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • I have to say I'm surprised and dismayed by the reactions, especially by the last from Bawolff, which came across as flippant and exclusionary. To have a broad-based policy like this makes little sense to me, as opposed to looking at a case-by-case basis. I'm a prolific and experienced contributor to many projects; I was looking to expand my activity into Wikinews and it's without question I could contribute a lot. But this "prove yourself" mentality is disheartening, especially since I think the proof of what I could contribute, the dedication I have, and the ability to bring a lot to the table merits little more than a "neutral." I already internationally with other users on other national projects to obtain photographs for things they work on, but for which their ability to obtain a photograph is limited. I guess you guys should keep your closed club - it certainly isn't inviting. Because right now, nobody seems to be saying, "Hey, here's a guy who has contributed quite a bit already, and we could certainly use another pair of proven hands." I withdraw my request. And Bawolff, you should try to work on how you communicate. I'd match my proven abilities with yours any day. --David Shankbone 01:48, 9 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Name: Carlos R Graterol Jr.
Location: Tallahassee, Fl (University Residence) and Sarasota, Fl (Permanent Residence)
Areas of interest: Politics, Local, State, and 08 Presidential Election
Reason: Florida is already an important state in presidential elections and now it may move up on the primary schedule, increasing its importance. As a Wikinews reporter in Tallahassee (Florida's Capitol) I can have access to candidates that swing by, and also I can report on things of major importance that involve the Florida State Government (Governor and Legislature).

Optional Questions for the Candidate:

  1. Why do you think Accreditation would be useful in the future, after the 2008 primaries?

I would still be in Tallahassee and could do Original Reporting on the state legislator and Governor. Lots of stuff happens in Florida, (Hurricanes, Floods and other events)and Tallahassee is usually where the Governor has his press conferences. The 13th 4postle

  1. What (specifically) do you plan to use your accreditation for?

Go to press conferences in Tallahassee. Do original reporting on campaign stops and primary in Florida if it gets moved up in the calenderThe 13th 4postle

  1. Have you ever written any Original Reporting for Wikinews?

No, but I would plan to do so if I get accreditation, I understand that you don't need it in order to do original reporting, but it is a very useful tool. The 13th 4postle

  1. Would like to question how/where you seem to have theese 500 edits. I have checked your user contribs here and it shows between 100 and 150 edits. Please explain this.--Markie 20:45, 4 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

My mistake then I don't know how you count them. I saw the Oldest 500 button so I thought that's how many I had. I have Taken it down. The 13th 4postle
