Exclusion from Main Page

[edit]

My understanding was that a story categorized as 'Local only' would appear only under Topic and Region portals listed as a category of the article. Has this been changed? -Edbrown05 05:51, 22 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Nope -- it never was... :D The daily DPLs don't exclude anything other than disputed stories and stories categorized with Category:No publish (which was added today, going forward). --Chiacomo (talk) 05:53, 22 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
I long for the day when we are writing so many articles that we need to exclude some from the main page. - Borofkin 05:55, 22 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
I too long for that day. I oppose, at this point however, excluding any news story from the main page. --Chiacomo (talk) 05:57, 22 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
I support categories to differentiate news with local, regional, or global interest. I oppose exclusion of news stories from the main page based on that scope.--T.D. Reid 22 February 2006
Okay, then what does the category do now? Is it existence preparation for the day when it is needed? -Edbrown05 06:05, 22 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

As it stands, the DPL for each day is generated thusly:

<DynamicPageList>
category=Published
category=February 22, 2006
notcategory=Disputed
notcategory=No publish
suppresserrors=true
</DynamicPageList>

In order to suppress stories using Category:Local only we'd need to add notcategory:Local only to each daily DPL. I suppose it exists for that time when it will be needed. --Chiacomo (talk) 06:08, 22 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

OK, gotcha, thanks for clarifying that. I was wrong on my understanding. -Edbrown05 06:15, 22 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
It excludes from develop list on main page. Bawolff ☺☻ 19:12, 22 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Bad idea

[edit]

This (IMHO) is a bad idea that wont work for Wikinews. I am totally opposed to excluding any articles from the main page. FellowWikiNews (W) (sign here!) 03:50, 3 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

I don't think the idea currently is to exclude pages from the Main page (it does from develop for some reason). The idea is to eventually exclude them (aka, when we have over 50 new articles a day). Currently the only thing that's really ever been excluded is stuff using template:specialPublish (portal:Quakers). Bawolff 06:59, 3 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
note I believe this category should be removed from template:nopublish. Bawolff 06:59, 3 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
The idea is meant as a way to allow for user generated content even if it is not necessarily MainPage stuff, for example, a quick report on Groundhog day (btw, the groundhog did not see its shadow this year, which means early Spring!) that could appear in the 'Culture and entertainment' category, but not on the MainPage using the tag. IMHO, the tag can be used for participatory inclusivity by keeping little stuff (even awfully written articles <I had to say that because I'm such a "not neat freak" when it comes to news>) from slipping through unreported. -Edbrown05 07:40, 3 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
Thats a good point, but I still think even the little stuff should be on the main page (at this point in time). We've had multiple articles about summer solstice's, New years, Daylight savings time, on the main page. Bawolff 07:43, 3 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
