Sportspeople

[edit]

The existing segregation of sports communities presents a neutrality challenge. We don't, in general, partition people-in-the-news into male and female (indeed, on occasion such a partition could become gratuitously controversial; if there is controversy, we should be reporting on it, not getting entangled in it ourselves).

We need an inclusive Category:Sportspeople; but then, a separate Category:Female sportspeople doesn't set well in the category hierarchy. I don't wish to delete the pre-existing category outright, either, which would obscure the revision history of past categorization efforts. So I figure on moving this category to the more general name, and then adjusting it for its new home. I don't propose to tinker at this time with Category:Women's sports, as that is really about the way the sports orgs themselves arrange things; the question of whether there ought to be a Category:Men's sports can be left for another day. --Pi zero (talk) 19:07, 16 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

A further wrinkle: if you want to know which of our sportspeople are female, how would you go about it? You might want to look for categories that are in both Category:News articles by person and Category:Women's sports, but those people-categories are not in Category:Women's sports; if they were, they'd clutter up that category so it would be hard to find the subcategories by sport. Although I do note that our category hierarchy is first and foremost meant to organize our articles, and the articles should be in Category:Women's sports, I recognize this is not a perfect solution. We may wish to take some further action on this problem, though I'm not sure what. I do know I want the male sportspeople out of Category:People not categorized by occupation, because with them clogging that category it's harder to identify other occupations that might usefully be given categories. --Pi zero (talk) 19:58, 16 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
