I think that Boris won because the public knew that a majority would be better than another hung parliament, and they knew that the Conservatives were closest to a majority.

That makes some sense. An interesting alternative to the theory I've heard bandied about, that it wasn't so much Boris winning as Jeremy Corbyn losing.
