Are Russian planes more dangerous, or is the airlines operating them?

[edit]

It's not necessarily true that Russian planes are more accident prone. See this article:

Soviet/Russian aircraft are NOT more accident prone.

[edit]

In addition to the Businessweek article cited in the previous comment, an official ICAO study determined that Russian-made aircraft have similar, and often superior (Tu-154, IL-86), safety records to their Western counterparts.

The type involved in this accident (Ilyushin Il-62) has a statistical accident rate of 0.75 per 100,000 hours of flight - this includes both fatal and non-fatal accidents. The ICAO's conclusion for this aircraft is as follows,

The IL-62, IL-62M long-range narrow-body aircraft safety level in comparison with similar Western products DC-8. B-707, for a total period of operation is the same as a DC-8 and a little better than a B-707.[1]

Thefore, and in the interest of both objectivity and accuracy. The last sentence of this article must be redacted as soon as possible.

The article clearly states that it is as a result of using older models (the DC-8 and B-707 you compare to are long out of production), combined with the problems that Iran is having in obtaining parts. Thus, it ought not be redacted. --SVTCobra 02:43, 29 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
