It's hard to believe that Packer was richer than w:Rupert Murdoch - Packer was only a local Oz businessman, Rupert Murdoch is one of the most powerful men on Earth (of course, his power is not necessarily all represented in money terms.)

Citing some figures from w:Rupert Murdoch:

  • What Rupert "shares" with his kids: There is reported to be tension between Murdoch and his oldest children over the terms of a trust holding the family's 28.5 percent stake in News Corporation, estimated in 2005 to be worth about $6.1 billion.
  • What Rupert was able to give away: Anna and Rupert divorced acrimoniously in 1998 and Anna Murdoch later revealed that her ex-husband had begun a relationship with Wendi Deng while he and Anna were still married. Anna Murdoch received a settlement of some reported US$1.7 billion in assets.
  • What Rupert avoided paying tax on: In 1999, The Economist reported that Murdoch had made £1.4 billion ($2.1 billion) in profits over the previous 11 years but had paid no net corporation tax.

These are in US dollars, which is more than Oz dollars.

Was Packer's fortune counted for him individually, or him together with his family? In any case, IMHO there needs to be a minor wording change in the article. Boud 22:57, 27 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The difference is that Murdoch owns his in shares, it is quite possible that on paper he might be richer. - 211.30.173.113 11:59, 29 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
