Add topicQuestions that the article should answer
[edit]When was the gun ban originally enacted? Who challenged it? --Brian McNeil / talk 16:17, 26 June 2008 (UTC)
- Good questions; I have added this information to the article. Thanks! CosineKitty (talk) 17:49, 26 June 2008 (UTC)
Category:Human rights
[edit]I noted that this category was removed because, I suppose, the "right to bear arms" does not appear in very many constitutions beyond that of the US. However, the basis of the ruling seems to be laid in the "right to self-defence" which I consider a human right. --SVTCobra 23:11, 26 June 2008 (UTC)
- I have just read most of the Wikipedia article on the Second Amendment. That is one of the arguments, that it is a common law right. However, I believe that for Wikinews to assert this is a Human Right is inappropriate. Have the UN defined it as such in the declaration? --Brian McNeil / talk 23:28, 26 June 2008 (UTC)
::It seems to be debated whether it is a human right, therefore it is news about human rights. If Wikinews includes it in the category doesn't mean that Wikinews is declaring that it is or is not a human right. Article 12 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is about self-defence. --SVTCobra 23:45, 26 June 2008 (UTC)
- Right of self-defense has some of the viewpoints on this (it is where I initially got article 12). But just putting a news story in a category doesn't mean that Wikinews is endorsing anything, it is just news about a subject that seems to be debated. If we have news about an arrest and put it in "Crime and law" that doesn't mean that Wikinews is declaring that person guilty or even that a crime has been committed. It is merely a subject matter. Well, those are my thoughts on this. Cheers, --SVTCobra 23:58, 26 June 2008 (UTC)
Heller's occupation
[edit]Factual correction needed. From District of Columbia v. Heller, 554 U. S. ____ (2008), page 2: Respondent Dick Heller is a D. C. special police officer authorized to carry a handgun while on duty at the Federal Judicial Center. [Emphasis added.] This is a significant distinction, because had Heller been a regular police officer, I believe he would have been allowed by District law to carry his gun (inside and outside his home). Because he was a "special" police officer, the laws for civilians applied to him off-duty. --70.191.123.18 16:37, 5 July 2008 (UTC)
- Done I believe it amounts to being a security guard at a government building. Cheers, --SVTCobra 17:53, 8 July 2008 (UTC)
