I don't think this is newsworthy. Do we need an article tomorrow for Uruguay's national day, then on the 27th for Moldavia, then Slovakia on the 29th, etc?
- Wikinews is both global and local. Any story can be published where-ever in the world it is from, as long as it is news. See Wikinews:What Wikinews is. FellowWikiNews (W) 23:53, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
- I wasn't questioning whether it was newsworthy because it was Ukrainian, but because it appears to be a non-event. There is nothing unusual mentioned in the article about this year's celebration.
- From my reading of the guidelines, it's not newsworthy two counts:
- First, since there is nothing unusual about this year, it's an on-going event.
- Second, it isn't relevant. There was no controversy over whether Ukrain would celebrate their national day. That it occured, as scheduled, is not relevant to anyone, Ukrainian or not.
- Also, from Wikinews:What Wikinews is not, Wikinews is not an encylopedia, and it's not a forum for press releases, whether from a corporation or a government.
- BTW, Wikipedia lists the current independence days on its front page in the "On this Day" section. That's where I think this belongs.
by all means, get rid of it. it was more a contribution for the sake of it. i assumed that, as wikinews has no size constraints, then anything goes. not to worry. kimmitt
- article is newsworthy - just because an event re-occurs doesn't mean it is not a news event. kimmit, can u perhaps add some background on the "rehabilitation of those who raised the Ukrainian flag in Ternopil in 1973." statement. wikinews is read by a global audience, some of whom, like me, may not be well enough informed of Ukraine history to understand that statemenet without some additional explanation. o/w, congrats on a well written first article. hope to see more such contributions. sure, i'll expand it a little. i was hoping to do a daily article on Russia/CIS but I will try to keep quiet on bad news days. Kimmitt--Kimmitt 13:21, 25 August 2006 (UTC)
