Template talk:Start an article

From Wikinews, the free news source you can write!

I'll say it again: There's not much point in adding prominent red warnings about links to the frontpage. They will only distract those who come to read the news rather than create articles. We might as well say "Don't post press releases" (fairly common) or "Cite your sources" (extremely common). This is exactly what Template:New article intro is for: It's right above the edit box and will only be shown once, until the user hits preview or save. If a user ignores that warning, then they're likely to ignore any warning. Never overestimate the effectiveness of warning texts, anyway.--Eloquence 17:50, 5 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Got News?[edit]

What do y'all think about this new system I started?  Thunderhead  ►  01:32, 17 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It was done before, and it failed. Almost no articles got written because of it. The main problem is people only write what they want anyways so it almost never turns into an article. It could even prevent people from writing by letting them take the easy way out and just post some links on a page. --Cspurrier 01:35, 17 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It was? Sorry, I didn't know that. Should I scrap it, or give it a chance?  Thunderhead  ►  01:38, 17 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
No harm in trying it, maybe we have grown enough that it could work. --Cspurrier 01:39, 17 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, let's give it a week, and see what happens.  Thunderhead  ►  01:40, 17 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sick and tired[edit]

I am sick and tired of stupid new accounts and IPs creating nonsense pages!! We need a w:blacklist ASAP. FellowWiki Newsie 03:44, 25 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Would you like me to modify my old newpage bot that I made for enwiki? I could very easily getting it working for wikinews, as there are a heap of things required in wikinews articles that those dont have (e.g. date or sources). It uses scoring so should work quite well. I'm going to do a non-editing trial to see how it goes. Matt/TheFearow | userpage | contribs 08:32, 25 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know. I've never seen your bot. What does it do and can I have a link? FellowWiki Newsie 21:23, 25 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It isnt running, as it never got approval. Im going to dig it out of my archives and run it for a while on non-editing them see its success/failure rate. Ill give you the logs once its done Matt/TheFearow | userpage | contribs 22:33, 25 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Shorts[edit]

is meant to provide a home to the hordes of stubs people create and leave unexpanded, as well as improve Wikinews' coverage of events, which can be pretty patchy, by allowing atleast a short account of important events to be written. so i don't think removing it helps in any way. what would help is finding a way to make writing shorts easier, writing a good How-to to be used as the preload page, or picking up unpublished Shorts and other stubs, cleaning them up and publishing. –Doldrums(talk) 06:05, 13 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
