I'm pretty new to this business. Over the years I often wandered past these parts to take a gander at what 'free news' looks like. On January 1, 2013 I decided to become a contributor. Why? Because, my word - we need it!

When I looked at the Portal:Australia it seemed embarrassingly out of date. This is not a criticism, it's a realisation that maintaining a news service requires a lot of content - continuously being created and refreshed - which would normally require a lot of people.

So even if I can only contribute on average one article per week, at least I am contributing. And if more people like me can contribute even small amounts, consistently, then Wikinews becomes a step closer to being a valued and trusted public resource.
