Busy

[edit]

Hi folks - I'm stuck in real life busily working on a tender (gotta pay the bills). I know I have a personal goal of contributing one article per week. When I come up for air I will endeavour to catch up on my missing weeks. Yeah I'm talking to you Reviewer person - get your red pens at the ready... :) Finno (talk) 22:49, 4 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Welcome

[edit]

Finno, welcome to Wikinews! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

Our key policies - if you read anything, read these!

Here a few pointers to help you get to know Wikinews:

There are always things to do on Wikinews:

By the way, you can sign your name on Talk pages using four tildes (~~~~), which produces your name and the current date. If you have any questions, you can ask them at the water cooler or to anyone on the Welcommittee, or ask me on my Talk page. Again, welcome! DragonFire1024 08:13, 29 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks Thanks for the welcome DragonFire1024. I'm slowly working my way through all of the introductory material - there does seem to be a lot that overlaps itself. Finno (talk) 01:02, 2 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Update welcome

[edit]

The project has evolved considerably since 2007; here's the most recent welcome template — though I think it's due for an update; an even more recent development is WN:Pillars of Wikinews writing. --Pi zero (talk) 19:15, 1 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Welcome to Wikinews

A nice cup of coffee for you while you get started

Getting started as a contributor
How to write an article
  1. Pick something current?
  2. Use two independent sources?
  3. Read your sources before writing the story in your own words?. Do choose a unique title? before you start.
  4. Follow Wikinews' structure? for articles, answering as many of who what when where why and how? as you can; summarised in a short, two- or three-sentence opening paragraph. Once complete, your article must be three or more paragraphs.
  5. If you need help, you can add {{helpme}} to your talkpage, along with a question, or alternatively, just ask?

  • Use this tab to enter your title and get a basic article template.
[RECOMMENDED. Starts your article through the semi-automated {{develop}}—>{{review}}—>{{publish}} collaboration process.]

Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally.
As you get more involved, you will need to look into key project policies and other discussions you can participate in; so, keep this message on this page and refer to the other links in it when you want to learn more, or have any problems.

All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.

Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere.

The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing.

Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly.

The core policies
Places to go, people to meet

Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion.

There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project.

There are some things that need cleaning up, and I hesitated to do too much since I need to maintain sufficient independence for review. See review comments, and detailed history of edits during review.

(Starting small is a wise approach; the first article tends to be a difficult hurdle.) --Pi zero (talk) 19:15, 1 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Updated & Thanks Thanks for your feedback Pi zero. I have made some updates following your suggestions. I can see it's going to take me a few articles to really get my game on here but I am looking forward to it. Thanks again. Finno (talk) 01:02, 2 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

  • Hello! I'd noticed your edits to the article about The Hobbit, from an edit summary I see you'd picked up one of the issues with the article - it doesn't answer one of the 5W, namely where.
We tend to explain to newcomers to Wikinews that the learning curve is steep, but - thankfully - it is not a long learning curve. Trying to compete with the mainstream is where we're always going to fall down, but creating synthesis articles is the ideal way to practice the format and style of a Wikinews article; it also builds confidence in your abilities and reliability. --Brian McNeil / talk 12:25, 2 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thanks Thanks Brian - I was trying to help out with some of the articles that needed work. I am a bit confused though when it comes to some of the older ones - is it still even worth publishing articles from Dec 16? There was one about shootings in Las Vegas but I doubt it's even news worthy any more so I didn't bother with it. Cheers Finno (talk) 13:58, 2 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

  • Published the video games article. Congrats! See review comments, and history of edits during review.
  • In answer to your above question, it's probably not worth trying to save an article from the 16th. It'd take a complete refocusing to achieve freshness (and then there's the 'good news' article, which has gradually slide from non-newsworthy in the direction of disruptive trolling). If an article doesn't make it to publication, eventually (as a matter of bookkeeping) it is given a two-day warning and deleted as abandoned.

--Pi zero (talk) 14:13, 2 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thanks Again I guess that's that milestone complete - next! It is certainly helpful to have experienced folks such as yourself providing feedback and support. Thank again. Finno (talk) 14:22, 2 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
