Ghana coverage

Natsubee, I noticed that you've taken an interest in stories about Ghana, both here and on Wikipedia. Are you from or in Ghana? At Wikinews we have very few contributors from (or writing about) West Africa, and I'm thrilled that you're contributing in this area. -- IlyaHaykinson 16:20, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the response. In your opinion, what stands in the way of bringing more contributors directly from Ghana? In my mind there could be obstacles of outreach, access, and desire: citizens in Ghana could be unaware that a resource like Wikinews exists, they may not have ready access to the Internet (looking at statistics, Internet penetration is very low), and there may not be an acute need for a citizen journalism site. I think you are right. The internet is growing but the penetration is very very low, compared with the west. Secondly, access is expensive even for the average middle class person. Broadband is even more rare and expensive. Internet cafés are springing up but again because of pricing, it is used more often for quick email access. Its a shame, because I have had information such as the death of Ghana's first first lady, Fathia Nkrumah deleted from Current events/deaths on Wikipedia as being not notable although I had provided sources and it was all over the internet as she is well known in Africa, while whole articles on the children of Tony Blair for example are acceptable and every single American first lady ever gets a mention of some sort. That is one of the reasons I decided to start editing here because of the intrinsic bias of Wikimedia. Second problem is that a lot of information is not online yet, so there are things I know I don't bother putting on Wikipedia as I cannot get the sources. There is going to be a dearth of information from the most of the third world unless a disaster occurs which hits western headlines or the cost of contributing to Wikipedia, Wikinews and others is within the reach of the average person there.--Natsubee 08:00, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
