Wikinews:Picture of the Year 2007

From Wikinews, the free news source you can write!
The following is a new style of Wikinews reporting or Wikinews development. It is still in the process of being created. Feel free to pitch in and help develop this idea or comment about it on the discussion page. (Please remove this tag once this page is sufficiently developed)
This election is currently closed.

The aim of this new idea is to have an election for a Wikinews Picture of the Year 2007, in an analogy to the Picture of the Year contest on Commons. With this initiative we would like to promote photojournalism and quality images with great news value for use on Wikinews and other Wikimedia projects. This idea is not meant to compete with the election on Commons (the rules and candidates are totally different) or criticise Commons in any way, rather it is aimed to promote more collaboration between Wikinews and Wikimedia photographers.

Images

Candidate pictures have been selected from our 2007 main page selected picture archive and from Wikinews' overview of the year 2007; this means a lot of candidates you know about probably haven't been added. Any image from the Wikimedia Commons (this means, no fair use images) that relates to a news event from 2007 can be added. The creator of the work does not need to be a Wikinews Accredited reporter or even a Wikimedian. Several of these images were found on Flickr or are work of U.S. government personnel.

The aim of this election is to find images that are both quality images (i.e., meeting the Commons:Image guidelines as much as possible) but have great news value at the same time (i.e. be directly related to current events). The latter criterion means that the images should not only illustrate the news event in question, but probably they should have also been created when the event took place (contrary to an archive picture). The candidates don't have to be Featured images on Commons (in fact, very few featured images on Commons cover news events). Please have a look below to get an idea of what we are looking for!

Voting

This election will use approval voting only (you cannot vote oppose or neutral). Eligible voters can approve as many images as they want, but ideally they should only vote for images they think should be the number one image. Your vote can be accompanied by a comment, but please keep it short. Voting will be held publicly on-wiki until January 24, 2007 23:59 UTC. The winner is expected to be announced on January 25, 2007.

In order to be eligible for voting, you must meet these requirements:

  • you must create an account on the English Wikinews if you don't have one already.
  • Anonymous visitors can also vote if they wish.
  • Unless a user account was on the English Wikinews, you have to confirm your vote on your home wiki by making a (blank) edit to your userpage with the edit summary: "I hereby confirm that I am User:<USERNAME> on Wikinews". We advise you to set up an account under the same name as on your home wiki.

Even if you have multiple eligible accounts and/or different IP addresses, you can only vote once on one image. It is discouraged and not allowed to vote twice on one image. Voting for your own work is not allowed, but you can suggest your own image as a candidate on the Talk page.

The Wikinews administrators will oversee this election. Once 3 administrators have confirmed the final result on the election talk page, the winner will be known. Steven Fruitsmaak started this fresh idea and is coordinating the election.
