Holiday traffic[edit]

I'm not 100% sure it applies here, but news traffic traditionally drops on websites over holiday weekends .. particularly when the holiday is observed internationally. -- Davodd | Talk 07:28, 27 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I'd say that's part of the reason for our recent drop (particularly today). Nice job on the tables David! → CGorman (Talk) 15:02, 27 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Google hits[edit]

What search are you using david? The day you got 113,000 results, I only got 93,100. Are you including our own namespaces in your results? → CGorman (Talk) 18:47, 27 Mar 2005 (UTC)

RSS stats[edit]

Would anyone be interested in seeing the circulation figures for the RSS feed? I'd probably need some help making a table of them :) Dan100 (Talk) 21:22, 31 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Alexa daily rank[edit]

I've noticed that the daily rank changes greatly as a day passes (funnily enough ;) ). Are people being careful to record the rank at the same time each day? Either way, we might want to consider recording only the weekly rankings, as the daily rankings will rapidly become a very long list indeed... Dan100 (Talk) 21:34, 31 Mar 2005 (UTC)

The daily rank is actually for the previous UTC 24hr day, not at the moment the user looks in. So, today we can learn what yesterday's rank actually ended up being. - Amgine 22:13, 31 Mar 2005 (UTC)

100,000 Google hits for 'wikinews'?[edit]

Maybe not :). PS don't tell Angela that her blog is third last ;) Dan100 (Talk) 22:08, 31 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I don't know what to do about this stat... I consistently get in the 200,000+ range from Google here in Canada (www.google.ca), but then I'm not searching english only. You should realize Dan100 that your search is unique to your session at Google, and no one else will find Angela's blog there. (Oddly, I found a page on meta that I'd written in that position) - Amgine 22:18, 31 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Ah, let me explain what I did there. Google only returns the first 1,000 results, so I set the 'start' bit of the URL to 990 (giving me the last possible page of results). As there aren't 1,000 results for Wikinews, it just goes to the end of the list. The 'of about' figure is just a slightly daft guess by the Google software; it never bears any relation to reality! BTW I know about the 'different results in different places' thing - we are served by different server farms - I think that's why everyone has been getting different results for this! Dan100 (Talk) 22:47, 31 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Google only served up 554 result summaries for CNN the last time I checked, which is obviously far short of their total hits on the net, so I'm not sure what basis there is to state that Wikinews has less than a thousand legitimate hits on Google just because Google isn't serving more than 500-600 summaries about Wikinews.
The "of about" total is closer to the mark than the number of results actually displayed with summaries, even when the summarized hits are far fewer than a thousand.
To illustrate why one can't rely on the total number of hit summaries displayed before arriving at the "omitted results" message on the last page of results, please note the total given for CNN "of about 13,700,000", (the 13th largest site on the net), even though Google only shows 500 or so result summaries for CNN. On this basis, the "of about 121,000" figure Google supplies for Wikinews may very well be close to the mark, give or take a few thousand up or down depending upon the latency of their spider. — DV 14:46, 2 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Seriously, it's not well known but the google 'of about' figure is produced by a system that can only be described as being somewhat optimistic, quite possibly just to make google results looke better.
Your result for 500-600 hits for CNN means that CNN is being mentioned on about 500-600 different currently-live websites. I don't think that's unrealistic figure. Dan100 (Talk) 16:57, 2 Apr 2005 (UTC)
For example, there's only about 250 inbound links to cnn.com right now. Dan100 (Talk) 17:06, 2 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Per-day statistics turned off[edit]

Dan, why have you removed the following message from the daily statistics section? Per-day statistics have been turned off. We anxiously await their return, as we use these statistics to determine a number of important facts about our readership. These have recently been turned off Dan, and if you can point me to where it lists statistics on a per-day basis, we can leave the message down. -- NGerda 22:22, July 27, 2005 (UTC)

Dan has not bothered to respond, so I am reposting the message. -- NGerda 23:55, July 27, 2005 (UTC)
I agree with the message. I'm not sure exactly why they might have been turned off, or where you even went to get at that information, but the fact that they're no longer available is important and should be left up. - McCart42 (talk) 15:01, July 28, 2005 (UTC)

It's not that I "didn't bother to respond", it's to with the fact you asked me in the middle of night my time.

Now to explain: logging has not been turned off. However, the interface hasn't been updated as the dev who works on it is developing a new version. We don't need a whiney message to tell people that. Dan100 (Talk) 15:22, 28 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
