Hello.

Welcome[edit]

Pigsonthewing, welcome to Wikinews! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

Our key policies - if you read anything, read these!

Here a few pointers to help you get to know Wikinews:

There are always things to do on Wikinews:

By the way, you can sign your name on Talk pages using four tildes (~~~~), which produces your name and the current date. If you have any questions, you can ask them at the water cooler or to anyone on the Welcommittee, or ask me on my Talk page. Again, welcome! Adambro 16:09, 7 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Coordinate display location[edit]

I think it would be better to have the coordinates on Death toll up to six in Minneapolis bridge collapse in the header like is done on enwiki so they don't dominate the article as much but are still available for anyone who is interested. This would of course require changes to the template. Adambro 16:29, 7 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I was thinking about doing that (I'd have to check how it's done...) but also wanted to consider the possibility of articles with two or more relevant sets of coordinates, and how we differentiate those coordinates from those which identify the "location" of a whole article. Something like the "display=inline, title" option for coord on EN-Wiki. At least a discussion has stared; perhaps there needs to be a separate project page? Update: I've added a name parameter and hCard mark-up, but it's again not working. Please do your magic... I've also put a "To do" list on the talk page. Andy Mabbett 18:36, 7 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Please do not add coordinates to articles until this can be discussed with the community as per Wikinews:Style guide. DragonFire1024 (Talk to the Dragon) 09:50, 9 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

What's the style guide got to do with anything? 24.125.54.105 09:57, 9 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
We don't add coordinates for every article we have. We don't have maps for all coordinates, and it does not go with the style of how we write our articles. DragonFire1024 (Talk to the Dragon) 10:17, 9 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It is already being discussed with the community. Andy Mabbett 14:46, 9 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I think the addition of coordinates should be discussed on the Water Cooler, I've never seen another news source do it (but we do some things others don't already). If it only adds information for "Geeks with a GPS" then I don't think most people would be too keen on it. An alternative would be where maps are appropriate to an article to display the detail. As DragonFire1024 says, if we're going to start doing this it does need worked into the style guide so the information is presented consistently and appropriately. --Brian McNeil / talk 10:28, 9 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I am not necessarily against it, just it needs to be cleaner. I left the coordinates in Death toll up to six in Minneapolis bridge collapse as you stated it to be for a a demo/test. DragonFire1024 (Talk to the Dragon) 10:33, 9 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It is already being discussed with at Wikinews:Water cooler/technical#Microformats_and_coordinates. The fact that other sources do not use coordinates is no reason for us not to innovate. Maps do not Geo-tag articles. For illustrations of their usefulness, see, for example, w:Great Barr and w:Netherton Tunnel Branch Canal (including the last external link on the latter) Andy Mabbett 14:46, 9 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
there has been no discussion yet on the coordinates. And until we, the community, can agree on a system, if any, then they should not be added. So please do not add them until a decision can be made. DragonFire1024 (Talk to the Dragon) 19:19, 9 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I have commented on this at Wikinews:Water cooler/technical#Microformats_and_coordinates. Adambro 20:14, 9 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
"there has been no discussion yet on the coordinates" Yes there has; it's even cited in the comment to which you reply. Andy Mabbett 09:31, 10 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
