Something wrong[edit]

We've got a little bit of an issue. I was going to look for an update to write. I found something... Odd. [1] [2] [3] The concept of a "main flight recorder" is utterly wrong, and not a fiction one would expect apparently stemming from a source close to the investigation. One recovers a flight data recorder and a cockpit voice recorder, collectively the so-called "black boxes". The easiest way for such a mistake to come into being, especially given the diagnosis of a technical error, would be for the FDR to be picked up. You could easily mistake that for the main prize.

In fact, though, what's been recovered appears to be the CVR. The BBC goes so far as to claim the flaps were moving out of sync. Yet the released transcript there only goes as far as "The flaps, hell, what a…!" That's a massive jump to make, and I have serious doubts a real air accident investigator would jump so far so fast.

Not, yet, sure what we should make of that from our end. Maybe nothing. Maybe find a specialist to offer their opinion (university professors are good; tend to enjoy talking about their work). For starters, approach any claims about this crash with a high degree of caution. Don't forget the Smolensk disaster and what came after: 'Unacceptable' and 'without foundation': Poland rejects Russian air crash report (2010), New Polish government takes down findings on Russian air disaster (2015).
