Getting a head start as a Wikinews contributor
Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have a short essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally. As you get more involved you will want to look into the key policies for the project and other discussions you can participate in, so keep this message on your collaboration page and refer to the other links in it if you have problems or want to learn more. All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.
Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere. The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing. Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly. |

Places to go, people to meet
Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion. There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project. |

[edit] Editor status
I have nominated you over at WN:FRRFP to gain editor status so that your changes don't need independantly checked. You could also review articles others had written if you wanted to. If you're up for that, then I'm sure there'd be no issues - it's designed to be easy come, easy go. Blood Red Sandman (Talk) (Contribs) 13:14, 20 September 2009 (UTC)
[edit] Editor status granted
I have promoted you to the Wikinews:Editor class, as I feel you can be trusted to mark revisions of articles as sighted (review). Please take a moment to read:
- Wikinews:Flagged revisions
- Wikinews:Reviewing articles
- {{Peer review}}
- {{Review}}
- Reviewed article version
- Flagged Revisions extension information, on MediaWiki
If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask for help on my talk page, and thank you for contributing to Wikinews!

[edit] Sydney dust storm - pictures
I've never been a fan of the gallery code, and a while back there was some mucking about to make more compacy ways to display several pictures on an article. I've changed over to using {{picture select}} on the Sydney article, although there's probably a few things I'd gripe about on the template display in the article. --Brian McNeil / talk 14:44, 23 September 2009 (UTC)
- Why? It looks worse (what's with the bar at the top?), takes more clicking to see the same images, and moves the text about when you change (including breaking into the sources section). I reverted to the gallery, it isn't flashy but it works. the wub "?!" 14:49, 23 September 2009 (UTC)
[edit] Admin?
Hi, would you be interested in running for admin? –Juliancolton | Talk 13:57, 30 October 2009 (UTC)
- Wow, that's rather unexpected! Evidently I've been on en.wp too long, where you now need several years service and ∞ + 1 edits to become an admin. I still feel like a newbie here!
- Thank you for the kind offer, but I think I'll stay a lowly Editor for now. I won't have much time to spend on Wikinews for a while, and I want to concentrate on my writing/copyediting in the limited time I do have. Maybe at some point in the future. the wub "?!" 23:25, 30 October 2009 (UTC)
- OK, that's fair enough. Although you can hardly be considered a newbie! :) –Juliancolton | Talk 23:41, 30 October 2009 (UTC)
[edit] At least ten soldiers killed in Pakistan clashes
This is really too short to be put up as a lead.
Also, it is VOA - so you have to be extra-careful for the POV in it. VOA is — in effect — a propaganda division of the US Government. their very word choice can be an expression of their POV, and less subtle than using "terrorists" instead of "insurgents" or "militants". --Brian McNeil / talk 12:25, 12 November 2009 (UTC)
- I didn't realise there was a minimum length for lead articles. I've seen ones just as short up before so thought it would be fine.
- And I know full well how VOA is funded (partly because you never let up about it) But I checked it for POV just like every article I review; if I didn't think it was NPOV, it wouldn't have been published. the wub "?!" 13:16, 12 November 2009 (UTC)
- Yes, sometimes short stuff ends up; better when we've a longer item to choose from, but can be tricky with 5 leads. And of course I keep nagging about VOA ;-) someone has to. --Brian McNeil / talk 13:24, 12 November 2009 (UTC)
[edit] hi
I have seen a message from you in my talk page, dropped by to say hi . --Pavi (talk) 19:08, 19 November 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Admin
Hi! Would you be interested in being nominated for adminship by me? You've been around for a few months, and seem to have a good understanding of site policies. We could always do with some more sysop help, and i think you'd make a good addition to the team. Let me know what you think. Cheers, Tempodivalse [talk] 18:57, 8 December 2009 (UTC)
- Yes, I would be honoured. I was originally planning to wait till the New Year (see above), but if I'm successful now I can get some practice in ready to
righelp with the competition! :-) the wub "?!" 21:42, 8 December 2009 (UTC)
