Wow.

I'm really surprised by all this. I only found out I was blocked three days ago after User:Mikemoral informed me. I actually thought that someone had gained access to my account and was doing vandalism. I never thought for a minute that I could be blocked for not editing.

I didn't vandalise, I didn't break the 3RR rule, I haven't "excessively and consistently [broken] site policy", and I'm not a troublemaker.

Yes, I failed to write an article after promising I would, but I did not misrepresent Wikinews or commit "gross misconduct" as McNeil insists.

It's fine that you discuss the situation at WN:AAA, but you jumped to all sorts of conclusions about why I hadn't, insulted and humiliated me, my name, and my unified account, all for the sake of some "fun", without hearing my side. As the IP poster said (which was not me), you had no proof of wrongdoing, as "journalists" you're supposed to hear both sides. No matter what I have or haven't done, you all have acted far worse, and have possibly damaged Wikinews' reputation far worse than I have.

Mike said that two admins had left because of what I'd done. No, they left because of how you've conducted yourselves.

McNeil has consistently lied throughout the process. He's posted select private emails that support his position and left out those that don't, abused his position as admin, crat and checkuser. He not only posted my home town, but the private emails from a third party, non-Wiki member, and checkusered an IP who disagreed with him, most likely because he thought it was me, which means he probably checkusered me, too. And then while he's making out that he's all hurt and he put in a lot of hard work getting me into this event, he sent me emails where he said, "For me, the fun's been writing some semi-outrageous bullshit to get you in. :D If you'd want to do the 2011 one too, then keep in touch with this promoter guy. The Wikinews Cabal would help sweet-talk him" and "Oh, and please make sure I get further opportunities to concoct outrageous bluffs". I've seen the emails he sent, I also spoke and met with the person we had been in contact with on two occasions, so I know how much he actually did.

I am not asking to be unblocked. I wouldn't contribute to this project even if I was. I'm considering not contributing to any Wiki project again after all this. This username is unified to all my cross-project accounts, and it is my real name. My home town has been published. I stupidly put my phone number on my userpage, and have since received vile voicemail messages, no doubt from the people who asked Brian to put more images of death on my userpage, which again, is a grotesque misuse of admin actions and goes far beyond WN:E.

I was away because there was a death in the family. My 86 year old grandmother had suffered a heart attack on Sunday in her home. She collapsed and broke the bone above her elbow, a clean break which pierced through the skin. She also hit her face on the radiator, and the bridge of her nose was cut wide open. Luckily, she has a thingy around her neck and she pulled it and the ambulance got there. She had a second heart attack that day.

This all happened on Sunday, the final day of the Race of California. When I returned home, my wife told me that she had received a phone call from my mother and told me what had happened. My grandma had acted like a surrogate mother to me when I was in my teens because my mum lived in New Zealand, and I went to a boarding school in the UK. So I would stay at my grandma's during the school holidays.

I flew to England the next day, and on Friday she had a third heart attack and died. The "active editing" of WP during Memorial Day weekend was not all that active. They were mostly minor edits that took up about 6 hours in total, mostly as I was looking around online for flights for my wife and son, and changing my return flight details so we could all return together.

I didn't think that not editing would get me blocked. In one of the emails McNeil sent me, he told me that articles can go "stale", he didn't make like it was a serious thing, which is why I didn't contact him. (Another of his lies: When he says he heard nothing more, I sent him two more emails and received replies).

I actually do have the article written but now Wikinews won't benefit from it, and neither Commons will benefit from images nor Wikipedia from me writing on the article. I will email it in private, to Mikemoral, the only person on here who seems to have upheld themselves in a calmer manner throughout this, and actually had the decency to contact me, but I'm going to remove the names of riders, and other stuff so that it is rendered useless. Okay, sure! Thank you :) Purely out of interest, did you see my request at User talk:HJ Mitchell#Re: Hint or is your offer conincidental? Matthewedwards (talk) 02:58, 19 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I saw. =) --Diego Grez return fire 03:04, 19 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
Well I replied over on my talk page with a few tips to get started, but Diego and I would be happy to help wherever we can (the irony is he's the experienced editor over here, whereas I'm his mentor on WP!) HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 11:38, 19 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

  • Iz a no good! Have the real welcome template!

Welcome to Wikinews

A nice cup of coffee for you while you get started

Getting started as a contributor
How to write an article
  1. Pick something current?
  2. Use two independent sources?
  3. Read your sources before writing the story in your own words?. Do choose a unique title? before you start.
  4. Follow Wikinews' structure? for articles, answering as many of who what when where why and how? as you can; summarised in a short, two- or three-sentence opening paragraph. Once complete, your article must be three or more paragraphs.
  5. If you need help, you can add helpme to your talkpage, along with a question, or alternatively, just ask?

  • Use this tab to enter your title and get a basic article template.
[RECOMMENDED. Starts your article through the semi-automated develop—>review—>publish collaboration process.]

Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally.
As you get more involved, you will need to look into key project policies and other discussions you can participate in; so, keep this message on this page and refer to the other links in it when you want to learn more, or have any problems.

All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.

Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere.

The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing.

Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly.

The core policies
Places to go, people to meet

Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion.

There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project.

Temp Accreditation

Hi Matthew,

I'm going to set up an email on wikinewsie for you when I get in tonight. As I said on the request, we don't have "pro" ID, so I'll do a letter for you. Can you drop me an email and I'll sort all that out later?

You'll get matthew.edwards@wikinewsie.org and I'll email the password to your AOL account. --Brian McNeil / talk 21:05, 19 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thank you :) I'm using my cell phone right now and I knw en-wp doesn't let you do that, but I'm hoping wikinews does! Unfortunately my phone doesn't produce a squiggle so I can't sign my name!
Well look at that! It actually works!
  • Did the guy from the tour speak to you? I responded to his email this morning my time and won't be able to get at my Wikinewsie email until I escape from here and get home (around 2300 UTC). --Brian McNeil / talk 20:57, 20 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
I haven't heard anything yet, at least not on my aol account. i changed the password at wikinewsie.org and didn't notice anything but I'll check again. What was the general gist of what he said to you?
Nevermind, I checked again and saw an email from him. I think it's the same one that he sent to you. I'm going to reply and I'll CC it, but I'm going to do it from my AOL account, because I'm having internet issues at home and can only get online using my phone, and the software at Wikinewsie.org doesn't support my browser to reply. Accreditation revoked

Your temporary accreditation hs now been revoked. The wikinewsie.org email address will be ceased within the next 24-48 hours.

I am deeply disappointed I saw no effort to write an article on Wikinews and I would advise against applying for credentials from this project again until you make considerable efforts to redeem this failing. Particularly considering the lengths I went to in my efforts to ensure you privileged press access. --Brian McNeil / talk 19:24, 28 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Matthew Edwards, just wanted to let you know that we can still try to get your article published. The amount of time you have left is shrinking very quickly, however, so please submit whatever you have as soon as possible. Benny the mascot (talk) 19:37, 28 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

You have been blocked from Wikinews for wasting large amounts of time and effort to obtain credentials to represent Wikinews, then damaging our reputation by failing to live up to promises given to the organisers of a major event. You are no longer welcome on Wikinews.. Your edits have been reverted or removed. If you believe this block is unjustified or wish to contest it, you may add your reason to this page, go to Wikinews IRC to request to be unblocked, or send a message to wikinews-l AT wikimedia org.
