President[edit]

@SVTCobra: Which of the following is our motive when describing this usage to someone visiting this category:

  • Give them fair warning so they'll understand how to translate the usage when they encounter it.
  • Invite them to use it themselves when writing for Wikinews.

We should understand clearly which of these we're trying to accomplish, so we can fine-tune the phrasing of the usage note accordingly. It's not just a matter of prescription; suggestion can be a very powerful force, over time. --Pi zero (talk) 16:41, 1 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

A little of both. Hopefully we can avoid all the complexities described at w:paramount leader. I think the use of "president" is so widespread in English that we can say it is OK to use. Even Britannica] uses president. "General secretary of the communist party" is an insufferable mouthful as is "chairman of the Central Military Commission" which are the two offices which seem to be the cornerstones for being considered a paramount leader.
So, I am hoping this usage note will both tell writers that it is perfectly OK to just use "president" and to tell readers what is meant when we say "president". Once we have an agreeable wording, we should apply it to Xi Jinping and Jiang Zemin as well. --SVTCobra 17:07, 1 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@SVTCobra: I've twiddled a bit with the wording. What do you think? --Pi zero (talk) 22:43, 1 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
It looks fine to me. Now, if we create a category, should it be Category:Paramount leaders of China or just Category:Leaders of China with all the relevant redirects? Cheers, --SVTCobra 23:38, 1 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
If we create such a category, the former, with "paramount" in it. --Pi zero (talk) 11:43, 2 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
