Shortcut?

[edit]

Recreating what happened,

  • On July 11, 2007, by Adambro:
  • At 1917, a redirect Category:NC was created, pointing to this category. Presumably it was a redlink when first created.
  • At 1919, this category was created. It had a {{shortcut}} call evidently intended to identify CAT:NC, but the shortcut page didn't display because there was no colon-prefix on it (so instead it filed this category in that category).
  • At 1920, the redirect was edited, adding a colon-prefix so the redirect page wouldn't be added to this category.
  • At 1921, a small copyedit was made to the text in this category. However, there was still no colon-prefix on the {{shortcut}} parameter.
  • Adambro appears to have left Wikinews in 2010, and requested deletion of their user page here in 2011. They continued some wikimedia editing in 2012, but none later that I can see.
  • On May 6, 2014, Microchip08 used HotCat to de-categorize this page from Category:NC, the effect of which was to remove the category link from the parameter to {{shortcut}}. This didn't change the appearance of this category page, because that link had been invisible (having no colon-prefix, which was also why it was subject to removal via HotCat).
  • On June 16, 2020:
  • Acagastya added a properly-colon-prefixed {{shortcut}} parameter CAT:NC. An eminently reasonable measure given the existence of the redirect from CAT:NC and the call to {{shortcut}}.
  • Pi zero (that's me) speedy-deleted CAT:NC, and removed the call to {{shortcut}}.

I feel my action was a bit precipitous, as it would have been better, socially, to leave a note here before acting, for which, apologies.

I'm not sure (btw) why "CAT:NC" would be a redirect to this category. Afaik, we've always avoided redirects in category space, which in my experience cause confusion as pages categorized under the redirect tend to get "lost" — they don't appear under the target and are hard to notice since attempts to view the redirecting category are ordinarily deflected to the target category. --Pi zero (talk) 12:48, 16 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

I think CAT:NC was like CAT:DEV and CAT:REV. But don't beat yourself to it.
